The scene that unfolded before Alex defied logic and reason. A jagged tear in the fabric of space itself pulsed with otherworldly light – a swirling vortex of emerald green edged with a menacing crimson. It expanded with a sound like a colossal sheet being ripped, the noise sending shivers down his spine. After a minute of terrifying growth, the tear stabilized, hanging in the air like a grotesque gate to another dimension.
He stood transfixed, torn between morbid curiosity and a primal urge to flee. His gaze locked on the gate, mesmerized by its swirling depths. Suddenly, a flash of movement caught his eye. A grotesque appendage, a toe, followed by a spindly leg, emerged from the tear. Then another, and another, until a grotesque figure materialized completely.
The creature was humanoid, roughly the size of a small child. Long, pointed ears like those of a caricatured elf sprouted from its head. Its skin was a sickly green, its eyes glowed an unnerving yellow, and sharp, yellowed fangs protruded from its gaping maw. A filthy loincloth, barely concealing its lower body, completed the picture of abject ugliness. A putrid stench wafted from the creature, nearly causing Alex to vomit. Fear, sharp and primal, clawed at his throat. Goblins. There was no mistaking them.
Scrambling for cover, he found a makeshift hiding place, praying he wouldn't be spotted by these grotesque beings. One by one, more goblins emerged from the tear, nineteen in all. They were armed with a motley collection of weapons – rusty daggers and crudely made bows and arrows.
As he plotted his escape from this nightmare scene, a new voice echoed in his mind, the cold, metallic voice of the system. "[LV1 HOSTILE CREATURE WITHIN RANGE] [HOST SHOULD KILL TO GAIN EXP] [HOST NEEDS 10 EXP TO LEVEL UP TO LV2] [SYSTEM HAS BEEN UPDATED]."
So, the system was essentially forcing him to fight? A bitter taste filled his mouth. Dangerous, yes, but he had little choice. He needed to level up, to grow stronger. This chaotic world, with its falling comets and interdimensional tears, wouldn't wait for him to get comfortable. He needed the power to survive, whatever the cost.
Oh, the system was updated, let me check real quick.
With a deep breath, he muttered, "Status."
