Chapter 22: Into the Woods

Two Years Ago

Rakesh stood at the shore of the lake, the water stretching as far as his eyes could see. He closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of the setting sun wash over him. He inhaled deeply, reveling in the refreshing forest air.

“It’s beautiful out here, right?” His friend Martin called as he walked up to join him.

He handed Rakesh a beer and the two went back to join the others in their party, two men named Tyson and Mark. Tyson added more logs to the fire while Mark cooked a few fish that the men had caught earlier that day. Rakesh barely paid attention to their guffawing and regaling of their various escapades with their other halves.

“Rakesh?” Tyson’s voice jolted him back to reality.

“Sorry, what?” Rakesh chuckled. “I wasn’t paying attention.”

“I was asking if Mr. Married to His Job finally has someone special.”

“You mean, besides his left hand?” Mark asked without missing a beat.
