Sean drove home tired from all the company work. He walked into his kitchen and got water for himself. He missed the day's Irene would make delicious food and pamper him as he ate it.
Since his mother's incident, Irene had refused to return back into his home. But he missed her so much that it made him want to cry.
He got his phone from his coat and called her.
"Hi love " her sweet voice came through the phone.
"How can you call me that after days of refusing my proposal of coming back home" Sean angrily spat out.
"Sean, you and I know that isn't my home. Your mother made it so clear that day. And I will be stupid enough to even set foot in that house again "
Sean felt even more exhausted and depressed.
"I know but I really need someone right now, Arthur has been driving us nuts at the company, but I can't say anything since we all know his using work as a distraction "
"Instead of rumbling about me coming back, just be there for your best friend, " Irene said.
Feeling guilty Sean immediately said, " Am always there for him. But it's getting harder and harder, Rose used to control him in ways we could not understand that he had turned into a dog on a leach for her. But now his more of a beast than a dog "
"You should know how he feels, without her. So once in while take him out for a beer and let him talk about it "
Sean not wanting to argue with her instantly agreed.
"But what about us ?" he asked.
"What?.." Irene asked back.
"When should we settle our issues?"
"Sean I love you but as long as your mother is still against us. Am not coming back into the house " Without saying anything more she hung up.
Sean was left angrier than before he called her.
"I always call about us but you end up talking about Arthur " he cursed and walked upstairs.
As he was taking a shower he thought about his best friend. Arthur had been avoiding him unless when they were talking about work. He had turned so cold that he barely even smiled.
Sean had tried helping him and being there for him but Arthur had only pushed him away with an excuse of being busy.
Seeing Rose in a coma for so long was affecting his daily life. Dorothy had told him that Arthur only smiled when he was with his son and the rest of the time he hung around the pool which was Rose's favorite place.
Sean came out of the shower as he dried his hair. He was still thinking about what to do about his friend.
After he dressed up, he called Arthur.
"Hi, meet me at our old hung out spot in ten minutes " Sean didn't say more and hung up.
Sean knew Arthur would come since it was a place they would always go to drown their sorrows or talk about something important.
Sean arrived before him and took his seat. He ordered their usual drinks and waited for Arthur
Ten minutes had passed since he arrived when Arthur did too. He was dressed in a casual way with his hair a mess.
"Why are you such a mess," Sean asked he passed him a drink.
"You woke me up and told me to be here in ten minutes so I just jumped out of bed and came " Arthur defended himself.
Sean ordered more drinks and soon Arthur was half drunk.
"Sean, I think it's time you tell me why you called me here?" Arthur asked
"I don't always call you out for something. I just wanted my drinking buddy "
Arthur laughed as he took another glass of his drink. Sean was right, they both needed each other now.
"What's your reason for drinking today?" Arthur asked.
"Well, My mother made my perfect life a mess when she threw Irene out of the house who now has refused to come back no matter what I do " Sean cried out.
Arthur smiled as he watched his mate drain his glass.
"What about you Arthur, what's your reason?" Sean asked.
"I don't have a reason. You called me and I came" he lied.
Sean chuckled and asked him again. This time Arthur fell silent for a second before he said " "Am drinking because my life that was going to well that I thought it was a dream was shattered by a single accident. The woman I could not miss a day without seeing is now laying in a coma with little hope of waking up "
Sean saw Arthur trying to hide his tears that had started to flow.
"Am trying so hard to keep it together for our son, but every time I look at her when I get home, I feel more helpless and useless. I had promised to live and protect her but I failed " Arthur cried
He took the whole bottle and drained it into his mouth. Sean didn't stop him but watched silently.
"I miss her every single second, when I sleep, eat, work, shower, dress. Every little thing around me reminds me of her. Our son us growing up without receiving his mother's side of love. Sometimes I freeze without noticing it cause am thinking about her " Arthur was now not trying to hide his tears but let them flow.
Sean came near him and patted his back.
"I miss her so much that it hurts to breath "
Sean was affected by his friend's emotions that he found himself cry too.
Soon there drowned there sorrows and pain in liquor. They sang and cried then got more drunk.
They drank until dawn. The owner of the bar knew them since they had been his loyal customers. He called Arthur's residence that sent a car, both of them were taken home by Arthur's men.
Dorothy helped them feel comfortable in bed and let them sleep.
The next day none of them showed up at work giving the employees a day off of Arthur's torturous hand.
