"Hanguang-jun, please don't trouble yourself. I am fine,"

Wen Ning looks at Lan Wangji who was kneeling as he examines Wen Ning's hand, or lack of it.

It wasn't really his fault. He did not even notice that his hand had fallen off when he was busy attacking that water ghoul but somehow the thing had bit it and submerge itself with his hand. Wen Ning did the only thing he could think of, he dived into the lake and latch onto the ghoul.

Call it a moment of craziness but he really did not want any of his body parts becoming a part of someone's meal. Plus, attaching another corpse's body part to his, eww.

He was able to kill the ghoul and get back his hand but there was one small problem. He couldn't float himself up. He flaps his arms, trying to swim upwards but was unsuccessful. He was not worry about breathing (his respiration system was dead) but the darkness that was welcoming him deep in the lake made him remember some unpleasant memories when he was held captive in Lanling Jin Sect.

Darkness and cold surrounds him.

Even if he could not feel the coldness, it was still something he had to deal with together with the darkness. The only good grace throughout that time was he did not end up crazy those 13 years due to his dull senses as a corpse. If he was human…even Wen Ning did not want to imagine it.

He was getting nearer to the darkest part of the lake and Wen Ning just closes his eyes. He would find a way out, he always does.

But before he could resolve himself to do so, something tugs him up and before he knows it, he was out of the lake and floating above it. He blinks his eyes in surprise and looks up, greeted be Lan Wangji's upset eyes. The only thing he could do was say "Hi,".

Now here he is; sitting on a small boulder with wet clothes on, dripping water everywhere and his wet hair covering his eyes. Lan Wangji's outer robe was hanging on a branch, a heating charm on it while he continues wearing his inner robe which was slowly drying using qi circulation to heat up his body. Despite just entering the cold water, Lan Wangji still looks as stoic as ever, ignoring his own discomfort in helping Wen Ning with his detached hand.

Lan Wangji was carefully looking at the tear. Wen Ning patiently waits for the verdict, enjoying himself by admiring the concentration Lan Wangji had on his wrist. If he could giggle, he would do so right now.

It seems Lan Wangji has finished his inspection as he gently places Wen Ning's right arm back to his lap. Lan Wangji walks back to his outer robe and pulls a sachel out from the robe. He walks to Wen Ning again and places the sachel on the ground near the boulder. He pulls out a red thread and needle.

Wen Ning was curious. Why did Lan Wangji carry thread and needle in his sachel? Like he knew this type of situation would happen to Wen Ning one day. Lan Wangji seems to have read his mind and answers that question for him. "Wei Ying, he gave me this," "Wei-gongzi?" "Hmm," Lan Wangji nods and continues entering the tread through the needle.

It seems Wei Wuxian was prepared for such circumstances to happen.

Wei Wuxian was not able to join them for today's night hunt. He was visiting Jiang Wanyin at Yunmeng Jiang Sect for their once a month meeting. Wen Ning was happy that Jiang Wanyin was slowly able to forgive Wei Wuxian but Wen Ning was still a sore spot for him, so Wen Ning would reject Wei Wuxian's invitation to go there together out of respect for the sect leader. He was content staying by the side lines.

"Hanguang-jun, I apologize for todays mistake. I have done nothing but cause you trouble throughout the hunt," Wen Ning lamented. Which was true. Before this, he nearly walked off a cliff because he thought he saw an evil spirit nearby. Lan Wangji had pull him back before his foot step on air. After that, he accidentally destroyed the few spirit cleansing talismans they had by accidentally tearing them when he gently tried to place it on the spots Lan Wangji had asked him. His strengh had fail him. Now, he has just cause Hanguang-jun problems by saving him from sinking in the lake. He should have not come.

It was rare for Wen Ning to be alone with Lan Wangji. After his return from Nightless City with A-Yuan, Wen Ning felt lost. He is an anomaly among the living and he knew he didn't belong to such a virtuous place such as the Cloud Recesses. He knew he did not have a place he could call home and decided that he should probably leave. Sad as it was for thinking of such things, he knew he couldn't stay. Not just because he needed to find a place in life but also, he was conflicted with his feelings for Wei Wuxian.

He loves Wei Wuxian but Wei Wuxian loves another and Wen Ning could not find any fault in Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji had not found another in those 13 years of Wei Wuxian's death and even before with their rocky relationship, Lan Wangji had never given up on Wei Wuxian. Such loyalty and trust between those two, who would dare try to break them apart. Not even Wen Ning thought of doing such thing.

Even during their wedding, seeing both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian speaking their wedding vows and smiling adoringly to each other, wearing red among the falling flower petals, Wen Ning would have cry if he could, seeing that they achieve happiness with each other, he himself content and a sense of resignation. A-Yuan stood between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, a wide smile as he hugs both of his adopted parents. Wen Ning couldn't help himself thinking what a perfect family they are.

One month after the wedding, Wen Ning finally decided to leave. He had inserted his intentions to Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan; jokingly implying that he needed to travel and small talks with those two about how he needed a change of scenery. Wei Wuxian would just ignore it and change the topic while A-Yuan would look dishearted even before he finished talking. Wen Ning stopped talking about leaving around them and they thought he had finally given up in such thinking. He didn't, he was just waiting.

The day he was to leave, Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan were at a night hunt. He had packed all his personal items, which was very few, and left a letter to each of them. He quietly walked among the shadows, careful not to be seen by the sect members who were having dinner. Finally, he reaches the front entrance of the sect. If he could feel nervous at that moment, he would. Leaving, it felt wrong but he had to do it. So with determined eyes, he steps out of the gate and looks down at the many stairs below. Slowly, slowly.

"Wen Ning,"

Wen Ning tensed upon hearing that soft voice. He slowly moves his head back and was greeted with Lan Wangji, leaning on the wall of the entrance and looking at Wen Ning with unreadable eyes. Wen Ning turns his body towards Lan Wangji and promtly bows to him. "Hanguang-jun," he whispered. This wasn't going according to plan.

Lan Wanji gives a long look to Wen Ning and walks over to him. Wen Ning swears he can see a forlorn gaze from Lan Wangji but that is probably his imagination. The man stops in front of Wen Ning and silently stares at him before turning his back. "Come," Lan Wangji ordered him and he walks towards the direction of his jingshi. Wen Ning hesitated but followed behind, timidly looking down at the ground as he walks behind the ever-quiet Lan Wangji.

Wen Ning thought they would stop in front of the jingshi but Lan Wanji continues to walk across the small lake near the area. A bridge between the lake connecting their jingshi area and a small island was recently built but Wen Ning didn't know why. He finally found his answer when they arrive at the spot.

There stood a hut hidden between the trees. Flowers were blooming in front of the hut's lawn and there were a few rabbits munching on grass. It was small and look cosy. It was perfect. Wen Ning's fingers fidgetted and his eyes were trembling. "This is…," "Yours," Lan Zhan answered for him. Wen Ning whipped his head back, his eyes wide in surprise. "Hanguang-jun this is too much. I can't accept this, it's too much," his voice firm as he sets a steady gaze on Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji looks at him, a soft lift of his lips that Wen Ning was thankful that his blush was nonexistant now. He walks in front of Wen Ning and pats his head. "Your home is here. Stay Wen Ning," and all Wen Ning could do was grip his hands-on Lan Wangji's robe and nod back, wishing he could shed tears.

It has been three years now and here they are, soaking wet. The letters he had left when he went to get them dissapear suddenly. He didn't think much of it but maybe…

"You have done nothing wrong," Lan Wangji's tone was firm as he took Wen Ning's severed hand. Wen Ning moves his arm, positioning it to make it easier for Lan Wangji. Slowly and carefully, Lan Wangji begins to sew his hand back to his wrist.

Wen Ning admires Lan Wangji's concentration. He took care to be careful fron tearing any sensitive skin part around the wrist. His forehead furrows as he patiently threads the needle to one part after one part. It feels heartwarming and surprising to be care by Lan Wangji. Something within Wen Ning's dead heart blooms with a certain emotion he has only come to associate with Wei Wuxian but Wen Ning avoids thinking deep into it. There is no use in getting his hope up in something that will never come true.

Lan Wangji has finish attaching his hand and Wen Ning looks in wonder as the red thread shines and dissapears within the skin as if it had not just been torn off. Lan Wangji hums, feeling satisfy. He continues holding Wen Ning's hand, gently circling his thumb to Wen Ning's palm and caressing the skin of his wrist. "Soft and delicate," he says quietly. Wen Ning eyes turn big but before he could question it Lan Wangji stands and walk over his now dried outer robe. "Let us return," Lan Wangji says, waiting for Wen Ning.

Wen Ning quickly stands and walks to Lan Wangji's side. Lan Wangji looks at Wen Ning up and down and suddenly takes off Wen Ning's wet robes. Lan Wangji then puts his dry outer robe around the speechless corpse while throwing the wet one to the ground. "I will buy you a new robe. Come," Lan Wangji walks in front of Wen Ning who could see that despite the expressionless face, the tip of Lan Wangji's ears were bright red.

Wen Ning forms a small smile. He tightens the robe around him, wishing he could feel the warmth and scent of Lan Wangji but this was enough. Here with Lan Wangji is enough.

"Yes Hanguang-jun, let us return," Wen Ning excitingly say as he runs up to Lan Wangji, finally walking beside him. Their hands bump into each other as they walk, side by side but no complains from both side voice out. The night is quiet and peaceful.

Silently but warmly, they return home.
