Alec had lost count of the number of times he'd paced up and down the hospital hallway. He didn't say a word but his heart was skipping beats. He didn't like hospitals. It's where bad things happened.
The doctor came out and called for him. They quickly had themselves seated.
" What is your relation to the patient?"
" I'm her fiancé. Please skip formalities and get to the point. " Alec was irritated.
" Well , she's two months pregnant. " His answer was precise and brief.
Alec didn't say anything. " What?" His voice was inaudible.
" Well, boy, you're now a father. " The doctor smiled at him. " She seems to be under a lot of stress lately. That's not good for her and for the baby. You'll have to make sure she's in a safe conducive environment. These early months are usually very delicate and troublesome. "
Alec just faintly nodded. Time stood still for him. He felt like a passenger In his own body. He found himself by Gwen's bedside. She was still unconscious. He chuckled when he saw her belly. It was so flat. You couldn't even tell she had a little someone in there. He brought his hand to her tummy and rested it there. His chest warmed up.
" Hey little guy. " He was whispering. "I'm your father."
A little human...a piece of him and Gwen. He didn't think he'd trade this moment for anything in the world.
" Why are you smiling all alone?" Gwen slowly sat up with a smile. She had just opened her eyes.
" What did the doctor say? How long do I have to live?" She joked.
" Don't say that again." Alec hugged her. She felt different this time. She was fragile in his arms. He felt like he had to be careful or he'd hurt the baby.
" What's wrong Alec?" She could sense a change in him. " Are you okay?"
He kissed her and pinched her nose.
" When were you planning to tell me?" Alec kissed her again.
" Tell you about?" Gwen was clueless. " Alec...what are you talking about?"
" Our baby. " He kissed her again but she didn't move. Her eyes shot open.
" What...what...our baby?" She was stammering.
Alec laughed at her blank expression. She was cute.
" Are you telling me you had no idea that you were two months pregnant?"
Gwen's brows furrowed. She held her head and closed her eyes. He was right. How had she not noticed. Her period hadn't shown. She touched her tummy and she felt a million butterflies inside her. She was going to be a mother.
" Alec..." She looked up at him. She stared to cry again. She had no idea why. " I'm pregnant. "
Alec held her in an embrace he hoped would last forever. He had it all. The love of his life and a baby.
