After they dropped Bohai off to school, the three men remained in the car in an awkward silence. Liu Zhiqiang thought it was like this because of him so he tried to start a conversation. "So tell me how did you two meet?"
Wang Yong continued to stare at his god brother who maintained a polite smile in front of his father. "Kong Zhu, why don't you say it? I just can't seem to recall the story."
Kong Zhu smiled sarcastically at Wang Yong. He knew that he was only trying to put him on the spot so that he would make mistakes and then he would go and report it to his godfather. "We met when we were in 8th grade. Poor Wang Yong was being bullied by some senior students during break and I happened to be passing by at that time..."
Liu Zhiqiang's eyes sparkled as he heard the story so he leaned forward towards Kong Zhu. "Don't tell me you appeared and beat up those students to protect my son? Kong Zhu, I am really grateful....."
"Not really, Mr Liu. I was also a scrawny kid like Wang Yong, where would I get the courage or the strength to beat up those big bullies? I quickly ran away to call a teacher who caught them and took them to the principal's office to be punished." Kong Zhu noticed that the man in front of him seemed even more grateful to him when he heard the story, his eyes glittering with appreciation.
"Oh, Thank you Kong Zhu for gathering the courage to help another person just like you. The Liu family will definitely not forget this good deed." Liu Zhiqiang said.
Kong Zhu pretended to be embarrassed by his attitude, waving it off. "Oh its nothing , Mr Liu. I have always pitied Wang Yong who had no one to protect him and care for him..."
Liu Zhiqiang felt another wave of remorse and regret towards Wang Yong again the minute he heard Kong Zhu talk. He lowered his eyes. "It is all my fault. I should have never allowed his mother to convince me to...."
"It's all in the past, dear Father. Of course, I forgive you. Let's not talk about this again." Wang Yong felt like strangling this persistent pest who was always circling around him and his life. He could still remember what really happened the first day they met.
When he had just entered the organization, he was still going through a hard time barely having anything to eat. At that time, Kúiwù had left him under the care of Kong Zhu who was a proverbial white lotus. He would always pretend to be nice to him in public and maltreat him in secret. Back then, the gangs had not been split so everyone turned a blind eye to his predicament under the iron rule of his god brother.
His sufferings finally came to an end when god brother went too far that day. He was just fourteen when his seventeen year old god brother forced him to do an oral drug test. All hell had let loose when Kúiwù found out the true reason why his second godson was in the hospital barely fighting for his life. When he had managed to recover under the care if the best specialists in Chongqing, Wang Yong returned to get his first taste of revenge.
It was sweet. Very sweet.
And now, it seemed like his idiotic senior brother had forgotten his lesson because he was here now trying to pry into his personal life. Again.
He looked at his phone that started ringing and smiled at Kong Zhu, his eyes full of mischievous surprise. "Hey, Kong Zhu! Look at who is calling me right now. It's your uncle!"
Kong Zhu who was laughing after sharing a joke with Mr Liu suddenly started coughing, his eyes darting straight at Wang Yong who was also staring at him with an innocent expression.
"This is such a surprise! I never believed that your uncle who used to give us sweets and teach us morals would still remember me. Take it, he said that he wants to speak with you." Wang Yong passed him the phone and started talking to his father in order to distract him. From the corner of his eyes, he could see Kong Zhu's face turn pale in fright but he struggled to maintain a normal countenance throughout the call.
When the call ended, he returned the phone to Wang Yong and turned to face Liu Zhiqiang immediately. "I have to go now. My uncle wants me to drop by in order to visit my aunt who just gave birth. Please drop me off at the next bus station."
Wang Yong patted him on the shoulder. "Congratulations! Please send my well wishes to uncle. Does that mean that you won't go to school today?"
"No, I will just go tomorrow. Thank you for taking care of me, Mr Liu." Kong Zhu resisted the urge to wipe the sweat off his forehead and quickly left the car to grab the bus instead.
Luckily for them, they had not yet reached Wang Yong's school and they had not yet left the city so they just continued on their journey. Liu Zhiqiang commented. "That young boy, Kong Zhu seems like a nice person. It's good if you can keep friends like him."
Wang Yong laughed and agreed. "Of course, Father. There are still some close friends I have not introduced you to. When I arrive at school, I will ask them to visit me so that you can meet them."
Liu Zhiqiang nodded happily before he said. "That's good." He hesitated for a moment before he took one of Wang Yong's hands into his own. "Yong'er, tell me what do you plan to study when you enter college? What are you future goals?"
Wang Yong looked at the hand that was paced on top of his own, carefully removing his hand. He was still contemplating if he should also try to wipe his hands with a wet towel. "Oh, that's simple. I plan to enter the military and become a well renowned general! Father, what do you think?"
The driver who was in the front overhearing them suddenly coughed.
