Kaelin Darkhaven stood in front of the ornate mirror, adjusting his tie for what felt like the hundredth time. He hated these formal events, but his parents had insisted on throwing him a grand birthday celebration. After all, turning 18 was a big deal in the Darkhaven family.
As he gazed at his reflection, Kaelin couldn't help but feel a sense of disconnection. His piercing blue eyes seemed to stare back at him, but they didn't quite feel like his own. His dark hair was perfectly styled, but it didn't feel like he was the one who had combed it. He was a puppet, going through the motions, waiting for the day when he could break free from his family's expectations.
"Kaelin, dear, it's time to come downstairs," his mother called from outside his bedroom door.
Kaelin took a deep breath and pasted on a fake smile. He opened the door to find his mother, Lady Lirien, beaming at him. Her golden hair was styled in an elegant updo, and her emerald green dress sparkled in the dim light of the hallway.
"You look handsome, dear," she said, adjusting his tie for him.
Kaelin rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Thanks, Mother."
As they made their way downstairs, Kaelin's younger brother, Cedric, bounded up to them. "Hey, Kael! Happy birthday, bro!"
Kaelin smiled, feeling a genuine warmth towards his brother. "Thanks, Ced. You're looking sharp tonight."
Cedric grinned, his bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement. "I tried to dress up for the occasion."
The three of them entered the grand ballroom, where the rest of the Darkhaven family and their guests were waiting. Kaelin's father, Lord Arin, stood at the front of the room, a proud smile on his face.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Darkhaven estate! Tonight, we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion: my son Kaelin's 18th birthday."
The room erupted in applause, and Kaelin felt his face heat up with embarrassment. He hated being the center of attention.
As the night wore on, Kaelin found himself going through the motions, shaking hands, making small talk, and pretending to have a good time. But his mind kept wandering back to the strange vision he had experienced earlier that day.
He had been walking in the gardens, enjoying the fresh air and the sound of the birds singing, when suddenly he was hit with a vivid image. He saw himself standing in a dark forest, surrounded by towering trees that seemed to stretch up to the sky. A figure in the distance was calling out to him, but he couldn't make out their face.
The vision had left him feeling shaken and uneasy. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, that his life was about to take a dramatic turn.
As the night drew to a close, Kaelin's parents presented him with a lavish gift: a rare, ancient tome bound in black leather.
"This is a family heirloom, passed down through generations of Darkhavens," his father said, his eyes shining with pride. "It contains the secrets of our family's magical legacy. We hope you will use it to unlock your full potential, Kaelin."
Kaelin felt a surge of excitement mixed with trepidation. He had always felt like an outsider in his family, like he didn't quite fit in. But this gift seemed to be a sign that they were finally taking him seriously, that they believed in him.
As he opened the book, a strange symbol on the first page seemed to leap out at him. It was the same symbol he had seen in his vision earlier that day.
Suddenly, the room around him began to spin, and Kaelin felt himself being pulled back into the vision. He saw the dark forest again, and the figure in the distance was calling out to him once more.
But this time, he heard their words clearly: "Kaelin, you must break the cycle. You must remember."
Remember what? Kaelin thought, his heart racing with excitement and fear.
And then, everything went black.
