"Not really…" Li Mu Qing interrupted Lynn, "We are here, and the exit that you are looking for is… here." Li Mu Qing moved the touch screen of the map pointing the exit of the trail that connected to the countryside.
Lynn could not believe it. A man from a fictional world can read a map better than him!
"General Li, how could you decipher it?" Lynn asked surprised. Li Mu Qing was the whole general package.
Li Mu Qing shrugged, "It may be all weird this map, but it still has the basic things of a map. It's not that hard to read a map. We read it always in battles!"
Lynn then patted Li Mu Qing's shoulder, "Thanks, mate. Could you guide me through this?"
Li Mu Qing nodded, "Leave it to me!"
Lynn had never been good with words or making friends. He always came around as the awkward self-conscious type. Yet, with Li Mu Qing he had felt a friendly connection since the beginning. Lynn thought that maybe it was because he knew that Li Mu Qing was just a fictional character and not really a real person.
Li Mu Qing was really good at reading maps and guiding Lynn. Just as Lynn had suspected, the hiking trail did end before reaching the countryside, but there was still a clear path for his car to pass. Since Lynn did not thought about it clearly at the garage, he did not brought with him a saw or an axe. It would have worked wonders now to chop down the trees.
Since there was no longer a trail, Lynn's SUV received a huge amount of scratches from the branches nearby. Lynn continued driving slowly so that the scratches to the car would be less. It was not as if you could now go to the car store and buy another car, so it was better to try to keep the SUV in one piece.
Li Mu Qing then told Lynn to turn right and that after a few miles, he should be able to see the exit. Lynn obeyed and just as the general had guided, Lynn soon saw the road that led to the countryside. This little forest trip had taken them 3 hours. As Lynn saw the road, his hopes got down again. In just mere 3 hours the road had been totally made a disaster. There were abandoned cars already, some of them even on fire.
"How could all of these had happened in just three hours?" Lynn said in a low voice grabbing hard the steering wheel.
"We, humans, are selfish creatures. In moments of despair, we won't try save others, but ourselves…" Li Mu Qing said randomly in a low creepy voice.
This crept the hell out of Lynn. "Please, don't do that again," Lynn said.
"Do what?" Li Mu Qing asked back as if seconds ago he had not just talked about human nature.
"Nothing…"
Lynn thought that maybe as electronics, the summon on Li Mu Qing was faulty and that is why he had started spewing nonsense a few moments ago.
The GPS then marked their current position and re-routed them.
"So… According to the GPS we should be arriving at the cabin in another six hours. We should be there by night," Lynn said.
Lynn continued driving. There were a few cars that passed them. It was most likely that people were still stuck in the city. Lynn guessed from the number of cars he saw abandoned on the road, that people most likely panicked and decided that it was better to walk off the main road.
The countryside road was almost desolated. There were a few cars going at full speed that passed Lynn's a few times.
"There is nowhere to run if we are in an apocalypse," Lynn thought.
He just did not understand, were people thinking that the countryside was safe? His house was close to the countryside and was still attacked by zombies. Probably some of his neighbors were already turned into zombies.
The driving to the bottom of the mountain was pretty silent. It seemed as if the fictional general had finally got accustomed to the car. Lynn continued driving, the only sound was the GPS's voice guiding Lynn from time to time.
Lynn could see that the scarce houses that were in the countryside, already received the news. The scene that Lynn was seeing was just out of an apocalypse movie. Houses with signs that says, "Stay away!" or "The time has come!". Windows were sealed shut with wooden planks. Houses lights were turned off.
On their way, Lynn saw a few zombies roaming in the horizon, but they did not pay attention to him. He had also heard people screaming for help in the distance. Just as he was driving into the path in the mountain that led to the cabin, Lynn remembered what Li Mu Qing had said.
"When in danger, humans would mind saving themselves first."
Lynn realized that he was no exception to this terrible truth.
Happy Holidays! As a special surprise, here is an extra chapter of the story (Also, I will update neither of my stories tomorrow or the day after). Happy reading and see you all later! ᵔ ᴥ ᵔ
