Chapter 33

Cato could still smell them as he and Boudicca fled across the plains. They kept heading south, towards the allied territory. The Britons wouldn’t chase them into lands controlled by the Romans. The rain had been relentless for the last few hours. Cato’s legs burnt from exertion, but he pressed on. Boudicca kept the pace hard and fast.

“Are they still gaining on us?” The Iceni princess called out. She was a little ways ahead of him. He decided it was best to place himself between her and their pursuers.

“I can’t tell,” Cato yelled back. The northerly gale made them seem closer than they actually were, and the rain dampened the scent significantly. “They’re probably still a way off since I can’t hear any voices being carried down by the wind.”

It was Boudicca who had heard them. First, at the hollow, their scent had been carried on the winds of the storm. The bloodlust was unmistakable. They were on the hunt. About three packs all searching for the pair of them.
