Chapter 1: Prologue

How long had it been? Four, perhaps five thousand years since it happened. Since the war ended. Since Pink had been… Blue Diamond's breath hitched as another tear traced its path down her pale blue skin.

"Oh, Pink, I'm so sorry. I should have done more," she mourned softly.

Her loyal Pearl remained bowed respectfully, tears streaming down her face as well. Whether they were from her Diamond's sorrow or her own grief was anyone's guess. From a distance, a sound echoed—a sound painfully similar to her own weeping.

Blue Diamond tilted her head toward it, her curiosity piqued.

"I wish I could have done something," a voice mourned.

Pearl stepped aside as her Diamond straightened and moved toward the source of the voice. At the edge of a cliff, not far from the ruins of her destroyed palanquin, stood a distressed native. Tears flowed freely down his pale face. Humans can mourn too, it would seem.

Sensing her presence, the man turned, startled by the sight of the towering figure. His eyes widened.

"Have you…lost someone too?" she asked gently, her tone soft yet inquisitive.

The human, after overcoming his initial shock, nodded. Perhaps this was death coming for him, or perhaps it was the alcohol making him lose his mind.

"My wife and daughter, yesterday," he replied solemnly.

The giant woman's eyes softened. The man returned his gaze to the bottom of the cliff.

"I shouldn't have let them go. I should've stopped them. I should have—" His voice broke into sobs as he fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands.

Blue Diamond knelt carefully, placing her hand on his back, mindful not to harm him. It was remarkable, this human understanding how she felt.

She shouldn't have let Pink have her colony so soon. She should've acted when she learned about the Crystal Gems.

"It's too late now," the human murmured, voicing the very thought haunting her.

The geo-weapon would soon emerge, and this man didn't deserve to die with the rest. Blue Diamond moved to take him but stopped when he spoke again—words that resonated deeply with her own regrets.

Before she knew it, she had settled next to the native. They talked at length, sharing grief and memories. Eventually, she persuaded him to come with her. He agreed willingly, finding himself in a sanctuary for humans—a place where Blue Diamond found solace as well.

More often than not, she visited this place, less for the bubbled Rose Quartz and more for the human. Explaining her actions to Yellow Diamond proved futile. Yellow, ever stubborn, couldn't understand what Blue was thinking.

Yellow didn't comprehend everything, but she did notice one change—Blue was crying less and less with each passing day.

Whatever this human was doing, it was working. Yellow was, begrudgingly, grateful.

Months passed, or perhaps it was years. One day, Blue announced something that stunned everyone: she intended to relinquish her Diamond form and have a human child with the man.

Yellow was understandably outraged and confused, but Blue remained resolute, as headstrong as her counterpart.

She explained her decision to her subjects. The Sapphires foresaw that the child would be as beautiful as their Diamond. The Amethysts were ordered to provide the child with entertainment. Pearl was instructed to care for the child and be a guiding presence, as she had been for Blue. The rest of Homeworld was tasked with accommodating the unique needs of a human child.

Eventually, the human passed away. A month later, Blue was gone as well. In her place lay a female infant—a child named Bluebell Diamond.
