Chapter 55

No one came to retrieve Isla's dinner tray, which was probably alright. 

She hadn't eaten much and didn't want to offend Victoria by making her think she hadn't like the meal. 

She readied herself for bed, donning her shift and letting her hair fall free of it's braid in a mess of curls. 

She didn't bother brushing it out, knowing that it would turn her thick hair into a frizzy mess. 

She simply ran her fingers through it and crawled into bed. 

She curled up on her side and stared out the window, watching the moon rise.

  She wasn't tired at all, and laid there for what felt like hours, tossing and turning.

It wasn't until the moon was in the corner of her window that she heard Kelly return.

  If she hadn't been awake and aware of every noise in the house, she wouldn't have heard him.

  But the soft creak of the door and the sound of large, booted feet on the stairs alerted her to movement in the house.
