Chapter 4: The Search, part 1

Gordon Freeman took GlaDOS's advice and jumped down the shaft. Before coming across the entrance to old Aperture, he found Wheatley lying on the ground.

"Ohh, you're here, you came back for me. Not that I didn't think you would, I just didn't know how long it would take – especially if GLaDOS had killed you. So, are you still looking for something or are we just going to try to get out of here alive? I know a core who can get us out of here if we can find him. He's an old chap of mine named Virgil. He knows how to open the main exit, and umm, entrance to old Aperture. He would probably be somewhere in old Aperture."

Soon after finding the entrance to 1950's Aperture and ripping off the door using the gravity gun, Gordon came across an Aperture Science Enrichment Center. GlaDOS's voice came over the speakers.

"I see that you made it this far and have Wheatley with you. Around here are a few test chambers that may hold science solutions that you can use. When you are finished looking around, find an elevator shaft to take you further along and then find a free-standing elevator shaft. That will take you to Enrichment Sphere #1, which is along the path you need to go. Keep going until you reach Aperture's 1970's facility."

The only useful test chamber Gordon found had the following recorded message from Cave Johnson.

"In this chamber, we were testing the Aperture Science Personality Core Levitation Plates on a core. The Aperture Science Personality Core Levitation Plates uses strong perpendicularly warped magnetic fields to suspend, lower, or raise the affected personality core in the air. Unfortunately, they were never implemented due to the fragility of the individual cores and the strong jealously it caused among the other cores. Apparently, jealousy is a natural part of the psychology of at least some of our cores. At least we told them all those lies to make them afraid to do almost anything. If you are a core who happens to be listening to this message, disregard the previous sentence."
