Out in the Cold

I watched her for a while, feeling like the world had ceased to exist, and we were the only ones there. I blinked back to life when Nick came between us.

"Morgan?' He said, peering at me. "Are you okay?"

"Samantha," I said, as if he hadn't said a word. "When you are done with this, I do hope you check the cell for the woman you think I killed. Enjoy."

I cast a menacing glare at Nick. "It's your highness for you."

He nodded. "Your highness."

I walked away, my shoulders slumped. I had been so excited to see her, and then this happens. It just feels like I should have let myself go feel like Nathan had wanted.

NICK'S P.O.V.

I hated doing this to Morgan. I saw the sadness behind his eyes, and I knew I had caused it. I couldn't help Samantha's state, but I could have done better.

"Samantha?"

"Yes?" She answered from behind me.

"Morgan isn't that bad."

"I know, but I can't help being scared."

"He must feel so hurt right now."

She swallowed and walked away, then sat on the bed.

"Can I talk to you, Nick?"

I nodded, but maintained the distamce between us. If there was a role I should be playing in both their lives, it should be that of a mutual friend. Not the traitor. Morgan deserved more than that.

"How do you know you love someone?"

I froze. Love. That word brought back more memories of Nicole than I knew I needed. More memories of Nicole than was healthy for me.

"I guess it means wanting them in whatever form they come. Is loving Morgan as a vampire too overwhelming for you?"

She shrugged. "Sometimes, I feel scared. He is so perfect. Extremely perfect. But then, on days like this when his more vampire side shows up, I feel like I should run."

She said it in a whisper, then withdrew and raked her hand through her hair.

"Do you trust him?" I asked, not knowing how else to tackle the issue.

"Does that mean believing he wouldn't do anything to harm me?"

"Mostly that." I say to her, thinking of Nicole again. "And its partly knowing they could do something to you, but you love them enough to let them do it. No matter how bad it could get."

She nodded again. "Can I go to sleep now? It's just afternoon, and I have had a long day already."

"Yes, sure. I will go talk to Morgan."

"Do you think the woman is really alive?"

"Morgan doesn't lie, but I will make sure for you."

She shook her head "Dont worry about it. I wouldn't admit to a murder I committed."

"If you say so."

She got into bed, and wrapped herself up tightly in the duvet. I made sure she was fully settled before I walked out, closing the door behind me.

I half expected Morgan to be out in the hall waiting to threaten me or something, but It was all empty and quiet. With Nocole, Morgan and Samantha all busy with their own lives or consequences as the case may be, I felt all out in the cold.
