With a condescending gesture she indicated the room. I dismissed her presence and stepped around her, coming to an abrupt halt in the doorway. I barely noted her stiff-gaited departure as, in obvious irritation, she left me there.

Another woman in an unattractive white uniform bustled about the room, trying to stifle giggles.

I gave her a brisk nod. “Pardon me.”

“Not at all.” She smiled, and that smile turned her into rather a striking-looking woman.

“It isn’t a good sign when Mr Trevalyan becomes alliterative,” Tanner told her. “You might want to escape while you can.”

I was taken aback by the cold tone in his voice, but I dismissed it on getting a closer look at him.
