It was a very attractive smile.

I turned on the ignition and put the car in gear.

Traffic being light at that time of day, it didn’t take us long to get to the house where my sister had lived for seven years. On the off-chance that Haynsworth should return earlier than expected, I parked a hundred yards or so away from the elegant old home, and we walked round to the rear.

St John approached the door, to the casual observer, calm and unconcerned, but walking beside him, I could feel the tension radiating from him.

“I know.” St John gripped his sleeve tightly for a moment, then released it, inserted his key in the lock, and pushed the door open. The house was cold and dim and eerily silent as we entered.

We had no sooner got to the middle of the back hallway than I noticed my nephew shivering. I couldn’t imagine reacting like that to the house where I’d grown up. Poor boy, what had it been like for him, with a father like Haynsworth?
