“You’ve asked about my parents and my sister, you’ve thanked me for your wedding gift and Jamie’s birthday present, and you’ve seen Jeremy. What did you really want to ask me?”
“James, are you…are you all right?”
“Never better. Why would you think otherwise?”
“Well, it’s been almost seven years since we parted. You…you haven’t found anyone.”
“Are you worried that I’ve been pining all these years for you?”
She blushed. “I know that seems conceited…”
“Not in the least. You were my first love, and you’ll always have a very special place in my heart. It would be difficult for anyone coming after to hold a candle to you.”
She looked upset. “I knew it. I’ve ruined you for another woman.”
I took her in my arms and brushed a kiss to her temple. “I’m happy. I’ve my work and my friends. And…” I let the corner of my mouth tip in a roguish grin. “I do cut a bit of a dash, if I may say so.” Although only with Jeremy, but there was no need for her to be made aware of that.
