Chapter 64: How Will I Handle These Small Shoes?
Under the guidance of the director's secretary, a middle-aged man entered the director's office.
Seeing Welma, he was slightly surprised. He didn't expect the new Director Welma to be so young and beautiful.
He dared not act recklessly in front of Welma. Everyone knew she was a fierce woman who had fought the Skeleton King head-on.
Tears streamed down his face as he immediately knelt on the ground and started sobbing:
"Director! Please seek justice for me!"
Welma felt disgusted by this type of person. A grown man kneeling and crying at the drop of a hat—could he even call himself a man?
Suppressing her disgust, she forced a smile:
"Stand up, and tell me in detail about your grievances."
The middle-aged man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out his phone, handing it to Welma as he cried out:
"Director! I need to report this person!
This scoundrel blew up my gas company!
Just to save some money, he didn't even bother buying ammunition and didn't care about the citizens' property!
He's a... a complete bandit!"
The director's secretary couldn't hold back:
"Our ammunition is provided free of charge to the security officers.
No one would blow up your gas company just to save on ammo costs.
And the person you're accusing is Captain Ethan Blake, the chief security officer, and a city hero.
Without his brave fight, who knows how many people would've suffered in this city."
The middle-aged man froze.
He hadn't heard clearly about the free ammunition.
He didn't care that the hero had saved many people.
But he understood one thing clearly—the person he was accusing was Ethan Blake, the chief security officer!
This was a high-ranking official!
His brother-in-law, who had just been promoted to station chief in the northern district, would not be enough to back him up.
Panic flashed across the middle-aged man's face:
"So it was Captain Ethan Blake! I've seen him in the news. He's a great hero!"
The secretary, slightly satisfied, continued:
"I guess Captain Ethan must have had no choice but to destroy the gas company.
You can't blame him. After all, during the demon siege, unforeseen dangers always arise.
We all need to show a bit more understanding."
The middle-aged man nodded repeatedly, saying "yes," while nervously waving his hands at Welma, who was looking down at her phone:
"I-I'm not filing a complaint anymore. Sorry for the trouble."
"Hmph!"
Welma slammed the table, her face turning cold.
The middle-aged man collapsed in fear, cursing himself for his greed.
Had he not just come here to cause trouble on someone else's turf?
He started sobbing again:
"I won't complain anymore. I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"
Welma shouted sharply:
"You're not filing a complaint anymore? Why not?
Do you think I, Welma, would cover for my subordinates?
This is the Security Bureau, the place that upholds justice in Bluewater City!
Even if Ethan Blake is my trusted officer, if he makes a mistake, I will still punish him!"
Both the middle-aged man and the secretary were dumbfounded.
Welma shot a cold glance at the secretary:
"You, leave the office."
The secretary quickly exited.
Now, only the anxious middle-aged man and Welma, who had a sly smile, remained in the office.
Half an hour later, the middle-aged man walked out of the director's office with a dazed expression.
Everything felt unreal.
Welma had told him that Ethan Blake's actions against the gas company constituted serious dereliction of duty.
However, because Ethan was the chief security officer, his rank was too high, and the incident with the gas company was too small to be taken seriously.
Welma hinted that he should unite the other merchants affected by the explosion and file a joint complaint against Ethan.
Strength in numbers.
As long as enough attention was raised, the Security Bureau would compensate all the affected businesses.
In all his years, the middle-aged man had never encountered such a people-loving director.
Originally, he had come to the Security Bureau on a whim, partly to try his luck.
After all, with his brother-in-law backing him, he wasn't afraid of causing a big scene.
Who would have thought there would actually be compensation?
In his daze, the middle-aged man accidentally bumped into a young female security officer coming out of an office.
The young woman glared at him fiercely before hurrying off.
The middle-aged man grinned lewdly:
"What a slim figure."
For such a young girl to be working in the Security Bureau, she must have gotten in through some man's... unwritten rules, he thought to himself with a snicker.
He glanced at the office beside him—the chief security officer's office.
Power is truly great.
In a cheerful mood, the middle-aged man walked out of the Security Bureau with a light step.
The young girl he had bumped into was named Sarah, Ethan Blake's apprentice.
She knew exactly why that middle-aged man had come to the Security Bureau.
To file a complaint against her master!
What was he even thinking?
Was it like a shepherd dog being hated by the sheep for trampling on the grass while defending the flock?
Why did no one care that her master had lost an arm?!
She had left work early today because she planned to visit Ethan Blake at the hospital and tell him about the complaint.
Bluewater City's Third Hospital.
Inside a hospital room, Ethan Blake lay on the bed, faintly smelling of disinfectant.
This room looked familiar—it was his second time here.
The first time had been when he was seriously injured in a fight with a criminal and was rushed to the hospital. Back then, he had stayed in this very room.
It was also in this same room that he had met the person who would change his life.
Thinking about it, that was only a few months ago.
Ethan's eyes slowly moved. If it hadn't been for the chairman, he'd probably be retired by now, working in the archives.
A slight smile appeared on his lips:
"Time really flies."
Knock, knock, knock.
The sound of knocking echoed.
Without waiting for a response, Sarah had already pushed the door open.
It was cold, and she kept rubbing her small hands together. She sat on the chair beside Ethan's bed, cheeks puffed in frustration.
Ethan chuckled:
"What's wrong? Who made you angry? Your master will arrest them to cheer you up."
Sarah snorted:
"Someone at the main bureau filed a complaint against you today."
Ethan raised an eyebrow:
"Against me?"
Sarah told him everything she knew.
Ethan chuckled:
"His company was blown up by me, so it's fine if he wants to vent a bit at the main bureau. Just don't trouble the man over it."
Sarah was even angrier:
"He was in Director Welma's office for almost an hour!
I heard from the director's secretary that Director Welma is very unhappy with you about this!"
Ethan was momentarily silent.
Sarah continued:
"I think that wench Welma—"
Ethan frowned:
"It's Director Welma!"
Sarah playfully stuck out her tongue.
She knew her master didn't like Welma either, but he respected the position of the director.
Her master was always restricting himself with these useless rules.
He wasn't defending Welma, but the title of director, and by extension, the authority of the Security Bureau.
Sarah said:
"I think Director Welma is just looking to target you! She's trying to make trouble for you!"
Ethan fell into deep thought.
Causing trouble for him just because some merchants' properties were damaged during the battle?
Wasn't that ridiculous?
Who would blame him for something like this?
He had the moral high ground wherever he went!
Ethan ruffled Sarah's hair:
"Don't worry. We didn't do anything wrong.
Stand tall, do what's right, and no one can force a guilty verdict on me."
Sarah pouted, muttering:
"Let's hope so. That woman doesn't seem like a good person."
Ethan just smiled.
As for these "small shoes," Ethan really didn't know what kind of trouble Welma would try to stir up for him.
