Amanda Smith sat still for a while, put the ring back on her finger, then stood up and hailed a taxi back to the mansion.
"Miss, we have arrived."
The taxi driver's voice brought her back to her senses. Amanda looked outside and was slightly startled, "Why have we come here?"
The taxi driver looked at her strangely: "Wasn't it you who told me to stop here when you got in the car?"
He even wondered why this woman would want to come to this empty house.
Amanda stared at the building outside the car door, her mind in turmoil. She hadn't expected that the address she'd mentioned offhand would actually be... Johnson Mansion.
Without saying anything, Amanda paid the fare, got out of the car, and stood somewhat dazedly before the immense structure.
The once-bustling huge villa was now sealed off with police tape. Without the servants, the Johnson family home looked like a vast, empty tomb, devoid of its former grandeur.
