Romain arrived at the Gendarmerie barracks on foot. Although there were still ten minutes to go by the time Dupont had summoned them to make a formal statement, Trencavel and Bertran were waiting already at the station. Monferrier arrived a few minutes later.

At nine o'clock the door to the office that Captain Maysonet usually occupied and which he had now placed at the disposal of his colleague in Lyon opened. Dupont himself showed up in his usual decontracted manner and invited them in. Maysonet was present, although a little apart.

One by one the witnesses gave their testimonies and then left the office. Romain was the last to enter and at that moment a gendarme took advantage of the open door to enter and speak with Maysonet. The captain apologized to his colleague and came out saying.

“There is a quarrel in a plot disputed by two families and I have to go to accompany my men.”

"Do not worry, Roger. I'll update you afterwards.” Answered Dupont.
