Chapter 20: Early Morning Phone Call

I heard my phone go off a couple of times, but it was dark so I assumed it was early and ignored it. Finally, I heard Slipknot play. I realized it was Renée's ringtone. I rubbed my forehead and answered the phone, "Hello."

I heard her quick intake of breath before she quietly said, "Hey. I'm sorry, I know it's early. I woke up from a nightmare and had to make sure you were ok."

I sighed. Her nightmares have been going on for years, they're not just about me, they're about anyone and anything. She usually wakes up crying.

"Don't be sorry love, I'm ok. I miss you though." There was a pause, then she said "I miss you too, my thief." I could hear the smile in her voice. I missed my nickname. "I missed that too." There was a pause, "Missed what?" I laughed, "My nickname, your smile."

"How did you-?" I heard her exasperated sigh, "I love you, Nathan. I wanna come home." I smiled, "Then come home now." She laughed, "My thief, I can't drive home at 4 in the morning. I'll wait for a reasonable time in the day, say goodbye to my family, then start driving. I probably won't be home for a couple of days though."

I ran my hand through my hair, "Ok, well you should try to get more sleep so you can drive later and I need to go back to bed cause I work in a couple of hours. I love you and I'll see you in a couple of days." I heard her yawn, "I love you too, get some sleep my thief." With that I hung up the phone.

I can't believe she's coming home. I've missed her so much, I can't wait to see her. I can't wait to see her smile, hear her laugh, hold her. I love her. As much as I enjoy thinking of her, I need to go back to bed. I stretched and drifted back into a peaceful sleep.
