Chapter 9

“Says who?” Kord’s voice was gruff. “I ever say there was nobody waitin’ for me?”

“No, but you…you seem so…so…” Doyle felt dumb.

“Well…” Kord hesitated. Seemed to be considering what he’d say before he spoke. “There isn’t, as a matter of fact. And it’s only partly because of the job. Bein’ undercover you don’t have your own life. You’re undercover.”

“So what’s that mean?”

“It means I gotta deal with the chicks I meet on the job—they’re tied up in their world. They’re not exactly…” Kord hesitated again.

“What? Not your type?”

“On a hotness scale, yeah, they’re my type. But in every other way, no. Besides, when I leave the assignment, what am I gonna do? Take ‘em with me? It doesn’t work that way. I’m not really part of their world. And they wouldn’t fit into mine. What’s left of it.”

Doyle considered what Kord said. It was reasonable and he’d heard it before from other undercover guys. But coming from Kord there was something that didn’t ring completely true.
