“C’mon. Give a guy a break.”

“Why? You give your old partner a break?”

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I know what everybody knows. You’re a yellow bastard.”

“Help me out and, as long as you never tell anyone, I’ll let you in on the truth.” Doyle knew it was risky promising to reveal something he’d never told anyone, but he was desperate to keep his job and Kord’s.

“Y’know, I’m tempted just to see what kind of cockamamie bullshit story you’ve made up to make yourself feel better.”

“That’s fine, as long as you’ll help.” Doyle looked her in the eye, then in a small voice added, “Please.”

He could have been mistaken but he thought he saw the look in Pulaski’s eyes soften just a touch.

“All right. But two things. One, I come along with you. My informants aren’t gonna talk to you unless I’m around.”

“And?”

“And you better not be bullshittin’ me about telling your story.”

“Fine on both. Think you can locate him now?”
