Carney closed his eyes, looked down, and shook his head. “No. I’m not.” He stood and placed a hand on the chair to steady himself.

“We’ve got a few more questions,” Doyle said. He knew the guy was holding back. “Sit down.”

“You’d both better leave now,” Carney said, his voice a whisper. He looked up at them and Doyle saw stark fear in the man’s eyes.

“You’re hiding something. Is it about that night?”

Carney was silent.

Doyle moved toward Carney and the man flinched. “You can talk down at the station. Not as comfortable. But if you’re withholding information on an investigation…”

“I didn’t do anything. You can’t take me anywhere.

“Watch me,” Doyle said. He didn’t know what had come over him. Maybe it was the possibility of losing his job, maybe it was that no one had been particularly helpful. He felt Kord put a hand on his shoulder.

“Please, leave me alone. There’s nothing more I can tell you.”
