Chapter 24

I go straight to my small cabin and stay there the entire trip, which isn’t very long at all. An hour and a half if the weather is good, I’m told. And it seems to be. But it’s early autumn and the days are getting shorter. By the time we dock in Dover, it’s dark and I’m exhausted. As I queue for a cab I debate whether I should have the driver take me to London or simply to the nearest accommodation. I go back and forth. Reasons for and reasons against. As a motor cab appears from around the corner and I realise I’m next in line, I decide to spend the night in Dover. By the time I get to London it’ll be late and trying to find a hotel at that hour is more than I could bear

“To the nearest hotel,” I tell the driver after my bags have been loaded.
