As usual no one quite understood me, so I had to backtrack and explain everything all over again.
Basically, we were going to throw everything we knew about the future, stop trying to fix things, and run a completely new direction.
My direction.
"If you had one life to run, how would you run it?" I asked my wolves, "Are you really going to be satisfied with the status quo? No way! We are going to run hard and run fast and run the most amazing adventure of our lives!"
Everyone knew the greatest heroes began with the biggest dreams.
"And we are going to run to win while we're at it."
"Sam... How..." Beta Lucas raised his hand to advise me, "If winning was a matter of choice... there wouldn't be any losers."
I shook my head, "We will win, because we are going to run very wisely."
"We are going to use our brains to apply every ancient wisdom into choosing our direction." I told them, "And then we're going to use our brains to apply every modern PR strategy into positioning ourselves as the heroes of our time."
Well, it sounded way smarter in my head.
You know how the good guys always won right? We were going to be the good guys.
You know how running against fate is fatal right? Well, we're going to catch fate like a wave a ride it.
We are going to be the heroes who everyone would root for. We'll be oozing everything glorious about the greatest Lycan heroes - their underdog status, their innocent ideals, their big hearts, bravery, loyalty, unshakable faith, and never-give-up-ness!
"Perseverance." Wolfgang offered.
"Yes." I nodded, "And good looks too."
"Sam, this isn't make-believe in the backyard." Ben said, "There isn't any magic that's going to guarantee a happily ever after."
"I know. No need for happily ever afters, just lots of happily successful missions." I said, and then remembering our last time line I had to add, "Magic is overrated anyway. We're going to do this with what we've got."
"What exactly do we have?" Wolfgang asked, "Just so we are on the same page, Princess."
"We've got each other." I announced triumphantly, "Let's talk roles!"
I pushed the second sheet of blank paper over the one titled "Objectives" that Harvey was writing on. It already had all the good stuff like "Rescue and rehabilitate fight dogs, rogues, and refugee wolves."
"Roles." I repeated. I was on a roll. (Get it? Haha, okay, never mind.)
"We need an Alpha wolf. Fluffy you're it." I tapped him on the shoulder and moved on, "Ben, you're his beta. Tonight, we'll run over to Morning Light - raid the rogue army camp of anything we can use for our own rehabilitation camps. Then arrest Kev and Beta Gerald."
It was very unfortunate that our dungeons in this time line was the horribly stinky one.
"Harvey, will try to rescue his dad and alpha by looking for evidence to prove Morning Light is innocent."
"But wouldn't he just find incriminating evidence against his dad?" Ben asked.
"Don't underestimate Harvey." I scolded, "I'm sure he'll find out who the real culprit is."
"You want me to find evidence on Alpha Kev?" Harvey asked.
"Not on purpose, of course." I told him, "You're seeking the truth."
Lycan heroes did a lot of such seeking.
After the investigation, he'd clear his father's name, and Morning Light would come under Night Leaf's jurisdictions again.
"We'll also need to get Ki back." I said firmly, "I cannot live without Ki."
I mean, a life without Ki was okay, but why settle for just an okay when I could be living on a cloud nine of lemon scented sheets?
But we couldn't just kidnap Ki.
"Someone think of a good reason for Ki to leave." I said, looking to Fluffy as I did so. I mean, why look any further if I had the king of drama in front of me, "Fluffy, make up a story for why Ki would have to leave the Lorents. Like is Bell abusing Ki?"
I looked to Ki, "Are they bullying you?"
"That's still no reason for a beta to leave." Ben said.
I glared at Ben, "Let's see how you like being abused!"
Ben only laughed. He was that sure I was joking.
"I think Ki should walk in when his alpha is f***ing his soul mate, kill the both of them in a rage and then run away and to escape execution." Fluffy suggested, "Forced into the life of a rogue! It would be worse than death for him."
"That's perfect!" If this wasn't a Lorent drama, I don't know what was, "Then Fluffy will chance upon Ki at the borders and take him back and reform him."
Oh, but if his soul mate was really… with Bell… well, maybe I shouldn't have been so happy to hear about it.
But that's all the betas back in the party. I turned to Wolfgang, "How should we do this?"
By now, I think my wolves were getting the gist of things.
"Maybe you could put out his flame and claim him again." Ben smirked.
I think he was joking, but I seriously considered it, "No, I'm not strong enough to take him down in this life."
"Perhaps a treaty with Snow Moon requiring a political mating between the both of you?" Fluffy suggested.
"No." I said firmly, "I'm not going to Snow Moon. Wolfgang has to come here."
"Sam..." Beta Lucas advised, "Does... Does Sir Wolfgang want to join us in the first place?"
I guess he had a point. Wolfgang had a castle and everything.
"He could support us from Snow Moon." Harvey suggested.
"Perhaps we can employ his consultation services." Even Dad got into the game.
This would actually be the most practical arrangement, but it was sorely lacking the flair of Lycan adventure!
"Maybe... Wolfie would fall madly in love with the Night Leaf Princess while he worked here." Fluffy suggested, "This love would drive him to madness and he would be the most relentless suitor in his pursuit."
That would be a lycan drama in itself, but I wasn't likely the direction it was going. And why did Fluffy have to keep pushing me towards Wolfgang like that? If he liked Wolfgang so much, he should just mate the guy himself!
Fluffy was still spinning his tale, "It would be so bad that even Alpha Gunter would come to know of it and try to intervene on his behalf. But Dad would always say no because..."
"Because I'm your Luna." I finished for Fluffy.
"WHAT?"
I winced at the combined volume of all the wolves around me, even Fluffy - who I was very sure aware of this fact.
"Yes." I nodded firmly. I think the trick to dealing with Fluffy was only with the firmest "Yes" and "No."
"I will be the Luna." I told him, "So you must do as I say."
Which was arguably the truth behind Alpha and Luna relationships.
"But he's your brother!" Ben said.
"He's also my soulmate in this timeline." I answered with a perfect calm I never knew I possessed.
I waited for a moment for this to sink in.
"WHAT?"
"No s***."
"Pop."
"WHO?"
"Why?"
"I had a shifting dream yesterday." I answered with a cool shrug, "Don't worry, we don't really have to mate. I know you don't like me that way."
Even as I said the words, I felt the numbness in my heart move down to my hands. Maybe it wasn't so much a calm in my tone than the emptiness of defeat.
It's just my luck that every soulmate in every life would not really want me if he could help it. Like if I hadn't kept popping up in front of Bell in my dream travels, would he really have gone on with his own life without me?
I don't need to really have a mate in this life. I don't need to really have a mate in ANY life, "It will just be so that we can run together."
"Should your healer princess from the Colored Mountains show up, you can take her as your mate." I told Fluffy generously. I wasn't going be the one in the way of his true love.
"And I'll pretend I don't notice your lover in Snow Moon." Fluffy agreed with his masked smile.
"Okay, so that's settled." I said. It's not perfect, but it'll have to do for now.
But if we could rewrite the stars... say you were made to be mine?
I pushed a third piece of blank paper over to Harvey to move on with the meeting and away from the unhappy refrain in my heart, "Let's get down to the game plan."
Who knew I would be such an ardent paper pusher? But I wasn't feeling quite like myself. For example, I was beginning to feel like something was breaking inside of me. If I stopped to think, or even breathe, I was sure to cry.
