By the time I got to school, most of my friends were already there. Yes, it turned out that I had friends in school. That was really nice. Even if they were only waiting for me to copy my homework.
"Yo." I said when I got to my seat.
"Hi, Sam." Jasmine came over.
I took out my homework.
"Oh, no. I've finished it today." Jasmine told me.
The cool girls came over too.
"Yeah, since you weren't in school yesterday, we split the homework among us and copied it ourselves." Krystal told me.
I guess that's what they used to do before we hung out? Wait, then why were they here?
"I couldn't find your hair clip." Krystal did not meet my eyes again, "So here, I bought you a similar one."
I looked at the black hair clip in her hand, it wasn't rectangular like mine was. More of an oval. She wasn't exactly lying. But she was definitely hiding something.
"It's true, we went to every shop we knew looking for it." Zara said.
Zara was her usual open self, so that much was true.
"Okay. Thanks." It wasn't my favorite clip, but I decided to accept it for their effort. I took the clip and put it in my bag.
I saw the medical cert in my bag so I passed it to Liam, who took it with his usual lopsided smile and a wink.
"How are you feeling?" Marcus asked me when he came to collect my homework.
"Wait, how did you get your homework?" Zara asked.
"Her Beta collected it." Marcus answered before he realized he was talking to humans, "I mean boyfriend... I mean brother... I mean that guy."
Henry was smirking from his desk, so I knew the other Alpha heard.
The girls blinked confused.
"Beta is his nickname." Jasmine quipped in quickly.
"Oh." Zara said.
"So this Beta, how old is he?" Krystal asked me.
"He's 17, and he's not my boyfriend." I answered.
"He's a senior?" Jasmine asked.
Pearl had joined in our group now, "What school is he in?"
"Green Leaf Academy." I answered. Wait, perhaps I shouldn't have told her. What if she decided to stalk him?
"Where's that?" Asked Zara.
"It's a really fancy private school up north." Pearl told them.
"I've heard of it." Jasmine agreed, "It's a through-train school and the kids go there from kindergarten all the way to highschool."
"Why didn't your dad send you there?" Krystal asked.
Funny, I often wonder that myself.
"It says here that Green Leaf Academy will be holding its Annual Spring Equinox Concert in March." Pearl read out from her phone.
She was stalking! Seriously?
"Maybe we can go together!" Pearl suggested.
"I don't know, would we be allowed to?" Worried Jasmine.
"It's an open event, right? We probably just need to buy tickets." Henry said.
"Are the tickets expensive?" Asked Krystal.
"Oh wow," Pearl continued, "They've got quite a number of bands playing. The guys look hot."
I looked at one of publicity photos they posted on her screen. It was just Dean on the guitar.
Everyone had taken out their phones to check it out.
"The line up looks legit." Marcus said, scrolling on his phone.
I wondered if Marcus would have been happier in a school like Green Leaf Academy. He would have easily found a band there to play with. They had so many bands at our pack school.
I heard to perform at the Spring Eq Concert, they had to audition for a spot since December last year. It was really competitive. Dean had missed almost all the pack training that month just to practice for it.
Zara studied her phone, "The guys all look like Liams."
Jasmine looked too, "The girls there are so pretty. They all looked like models. It's really different up north... Is it the water?"
Pearl added, "I hear the north had more magic in the air."
This was beginning to be ridiculous.
"They're just normal..." I wanted to say werewolves but the cool girls were there too.
"It looks like fun. I want to go." Said Zara.
"We can't." Said Leia, "Up north you need special visas to enter. It's dangerous. There are warlocks and werewolves and magic that would trap you there forever!"
"That sounds so dangerous." Zara said.
What? You're the ones living with vampires!
"I heard the best fight dogs come from the north." Krystal said.
"Do you think all these cool guys are werewolves?" Zara asked.
"It'll explain it." Krystal said.
Then the cool girls looked at me. Why were they looking at me? Did I look like a fight dog to them?
"Definitely a warlock." Krystal decided.
"What? No, I'm not!" I said.
"Well, you're nothing like a werewolf." Krystal informed me. I think my face must have made a strange expression at that.
"It's okay, Zammi." Zara told me, "I know you're a good warlock."
I'm a what?
"Because the weather got so much nicer since Zammi's curse got broken." Zara explanation needed no prompting.
Wait, no. Why? I had nothing to do with the weather! I can't even say for sure that warlocks controlled the weather, it's just an old saying... And warlocks are male! How did it become like this?
"I can't believe I'm friends with a warlock princess." Zara reflected.
I heard Henry and Marcus laughing from their seats. Grrr...
Maria came in then. It was a cue that class was about to start. Everyone returned to their seats.
I was sulky when Maria sat down next to me.
She looked at me, expressionlessly, but then I heard a little tinkle of laugher in my head.
-What had upset my alpha today?
-I'm not your alpha.
-More tinkling laughter. People see what they want to see, alpha.
-Shut up.
I pushed her out of my mind. She had a small smile but continued to look ahead of her.
Mrs Henderson came in and homeroom began. Liam went up to hand her my medical cert. Mrs Henderson slipped it into her attendance book and started taking the attendance... And the school day began again, just a typical day for a future alpha werewolf who the majority of the student body had decided was a warlock princess.
No big deal. My school life just had a tiny new complication, but I was the alpha. Nothing I won't be able to handle, right?
