We only had one hour to get the team together. Naturally, Harvey would be coming with. He had pretty much stood like a statue while Dad confessed to family secrets, time traveling, and his brothers' collective coveting of Grandma Luna's treasures.
Ben would definitely be p***ed if I took Harvey and not him.
Ki would be hurt if I took Harvey and Ben and left him out. If it was about loyalty, Ki was worth his weight in gold.
Luckily they both of them were upstairs in the FAO working. I was rather surprised to see them, each behind his own computer. #betalife. Bad mood or whatever, they were hard at work on a Saturday afternoon.
"Ben, Ki, come into my office with Harv. The rest of you wait outside." I glided into my office like a boss. I used to think I'd never get used to this, but now I don't think I'd ever get tired of this feeling. Hahaha.
"What's up, Sam?" Ben and Ki followed Harvey into my office. Harvey shut the door.
"We have a top secret mission in an hour." I told them, "We'll go with Dad and Beta Lucas."
Harvey raised his hand, "Are we your team, Alpha? What about the assassin?"
"Oh right, Dad said to bring one." I remembered, "Someone really loyal."
"We have three assassins in the Special Team, Sam." Ben informed me, "Cobra, EJ, and Fluffy."
"Who should we take?" I wondered.
"May I suggest Fluff?" Harvey asked, "Since the target is likely going to be a baby and its mother."
Wait, what?
"No way! My Dad would never…" But then who would the assassin be for if not Mimi and Jude?
"What's going on?" Ben demanded. (I couldn't tell if his bad mood had passed yet, but at least he wasn't walking out.)
"Dad wants to take the cats back in time to fix Jude." I admitted, "I'm not sure how he plans to do it."
"Take Fluff." Ben decided, "The good thing about Fluff is that he'd kill whatever you want without even blinking."
How was that a good thing?
"That's my thought too." Harvey said, "He was also privy to the cat's abilities. My only concern is that Alpha intends for him to return to the Colored Mountains, so his loyalty is only certain until then."
"We could just not return him." Ben shrugged, "It's not like he wants to go back."
Yeah, because Ben was the kind of guy who cared about what these guys wanted.
Since it was so super blackout, common sense tells me that the fewer wolves I involved in it the better, but the entire mission sounded crazy, and I could do with an objective opinion, which was no one in the room right now.
Case in point, Harvey.
"Hey, Harvey, you were there in Dad's office, what do you think?"
"I think Alpha Kingsley must have his reasons." Was my good beta's response.
In other words, "I think the only reason why I cannot agree with the great Alpha Kingsley is because I cannot understand his reasons which I believe must be beyond my own understanding."
Cos my Dad was highly respected by most of our wolves like that. He was the guy who led them out into the wilderness of the Green Packlands and carved a home, established a pack, and built an entire city - all in less than 2 decades. No one understood him, but those who trusted in his leadership were now enjoying the life we have here.
So maybe I was just the one who's not getting it. Dad would know what he was doing right?
"I would like to recommend Sir Wolfgang. He proved himself earlier rather capable" Ki offered, "Although, for the same reason as Fluffy, I'm not sure if knowing too many secrets would make it harder for him when he returns to Snow Moon."
That's right! Wolfgang! He got along well with Parry and seemed to understand the time traveling theories. I think if Wolfgang came along, I would feel a little more reassured...
"We can always NOT return him." Ben pointed out.
"As if that is an option!" I retorted.
"Technically, it is, Alpha." Harvey said, "On the condition that you defeat the challenger Snow Moon sends and officially take Wolfgang as your, please pardon the expression, concubine."
"Like I said," I insisted stubbornly, "It isn't an option."
"Just someone update me first. Bottom line, what's our mission, and background points." Ben ordered.
"Let's get Fluffy in here first." Harvey agreed.
1 hour later...
We assembled in Dad's office. Our full Mission Team comprised of:
Dad and Beta Lucas
Me
Ben (body guard)
Harvey (logistics)
Ki (healer)
Fluffy (assassin)
Wolfgang (advisor)
The two cats, Peony and Perri.
Everyone except the cats and me came fully armed, and Harvey had packed us some camping supplies.
I guess this was the only way we could best be prepared for any unexpected emergency.
When Dad explained the plan, it sounded pretty straightforward though. We go back in time to the night before Dad and Beta Lucas finds Mimi and her baby in our Packlands.
It would be best if we manage to scare off Mimi from entering our land at all. Since Alpha Mike turned out to be her real soulmate, we would actually be doing her a favour if she got caught by him, right?
All we had to do was make a ruckus along the borders, and hope Mimi sensibly takes a detour.
"Then what's the assassin for?" I asked.
"For dealing with repurcussions." Dad answered mysteriously.
Dad even explained the method to leave an "undo point". Like we would all go to the site 20 minutes ahead of time and wait in the shadows. Should something go wrong in the future, all we needed to do was time travel back to this 20 minutes slot to explain and stop ourselves.
This way, we can cleanly prevent any change to our past and all head back to our respective timelines.
"It worked the last time... More or less anyway." Beta Lucas said before adding, "I mean, not that anything happened back then."
Wolfgang was not convinced though, "Pardon me, Alpha, but I feel I must warn you that this is an extremely risky operation, and while the undo point is theoretically possible, in practice, we must be prepared for deviations from the original timeline."
"The implications for such a change in history is unimaginable. Furthermore, since the change will take place so far back in time, the resultant ripple effect will grow ever wider." Wolfgang continued, "The repurcussions would be unimaginable! It would not be too extreme to say that the Alpha Princess might not even exist in the altered timeline."
"Perhaps we should reconsider..." Wolfgang urged. See, I told you it was a good idea to have an objective opinion around.
"No." Dad said, "I understand your concerns, and I too have my own set of non-negotiables. Since the span of time is large, I've planned to embark on a series of systematic progressive time travelling missions to deal with the repurcussions and ensure a smooth transition and favourable compromise."
This was also when we might possibly need an assassin in our team, just to be safe.
I was very impressed that my Dad would have some kind of long term plan like this, but I couldn't help but feel uneasy.
Dad's systematic progressive method was to first go back to the original incident (Incident 0) and make a change. Then immediately return to our timeline to study the effect of this change. After that, he would systematically return back in time at various junctures (Incident 1-n) to adjust any unwanted side effects. Each time travel would begin with a strict 20 minute undo point, and would only allow a single change.
This way, Incident 0 and every subsequent incident down the line may be undone across the timeline.
"This is an interesting proposition..." Wolfgang rubbed his chin.
"Indeed," Perri agreed, "To think this Alpha had devised the plan to such a degree. He is not inexperienced in tempering with time."
"Not at all." Dad waved it off, "I've only had a little more experience."
I had to admit, "It definitely beats winging it."
And then I added, just to make myself clear, "You better make sure I'm born, Dad! And Savy too!"
"And Sabre... You can't leave her as a slave either."
Come to think of it... While undoing one evil, we were also about to undo a lot of good.
"Trust me, Sam." Dad said.
And I did. But... Why do I get the feeling that we were about to ruin my life?
