Is it Possible?

"I thought I could catch you this time..." Faith thinks to herself. She stares at the tree again where the mysterious man disappeared. Truth be told, this was not the first encounter she has had with him. She had seen him many times before, always next to people who are about to die. Faith sighs as she thinks of the first time she met him...

At age 3, Faith met Death. She watched as he stood next to her dying mother after she was stabbed 10 times by an unknown murderer. Faith, shaking, was safely hidden in a cupboard, her favorite place to hide. She watched as her mother writhed in pain and died - but she was not the only one watching.

For Death was standing in the middle of the chaos, unfased. She watched as the murderer walked past him as if there were no one. She watched as her mother smiled at Death even though she did not know him. She watched as Death leaned over and trapped a pitch black fog in a jar, taken from her mother. And she watched, as Death vanished into thin air. After witnessing these things, Faith fell into shock. When she awoke, she was in a hospital bed and her mother nowhere in sight. After that incident, Faith was determined to find the man once again and ask him why he didn't help her mother that day.

However, she seemed unable to approach him. When she stayed at the hospital, she was able to see him many times, always next to people who were about to die. She couldn't force herself to intrude on the final moments between a person and their loved ones.

She was also scared. She could tell that the man was something not human.

However, at the pond, she could not help but save the boy. His screams reminded her of the incident from 21 years ago. But this time, she was able to talk to him, only to get no answer.

Soon she would be able to ask why he left her mother to die.

-Afterlife HQ-

Death safely teleports to his workplace. He makes sure that the strange girl isn't following him anymore.

"Hey! N8!" A voice shouts behind him.

Death turns around to see Death N7, waving his arms wildly. He stares at the the figure and sighs. He wonders why the higher ups replaced the old N7 with this newbie.

Since there are thousands of deaths everyday, there isn't just one Death, but many. Death N8 works in country N in area 8 so his name is exactly that, N8. This makes his work schedule irregular and hectic, but Death N8 doesn't mind. Death N8 is the typical workaholic who loves his job and follows the strict regulations.

However, N7 doesn't enjoy work nearly as much as him. He takes his breaks seriously and his job as a joke. Death N8 usually wonders how a kid like this got in charge of area 7.

Death ignores N7's enthusiastic waving and walks into the building. N7 puts a sad expression on his face.

"Hey, don't ignore me N8!" He yells as he runs after him. He gives him a back hug. "How was today's work?"

"Don't touch me." Death N8 says. He pushes N7 off of him.

"Aww, don't be like that. I just missed you!" N7 says cheerfully. Death quickens his pace as he walks inside Afterlife Headquarters. The building, made out of glass and spanning 100 stories high, is invisible to humans. Instead they see an old flea market.

Death goes to his workspace and sets his things down in his office. N7 bounces in as well, chattering along the way.

"Hey did you hear that they are dividing N21 into two divisions? Now we're going to have a new person, N22. And apparently..." N7 leans in and whispers, "She's a girl!"

The word "girl" reminds Death of the incident from before. His face starts to feel warm again.

N7 sees Death N8's expression and feels gleeful. N8 never reacted to his gossip before. "I can see that you're excited too!" N7 says, grinning.

"I'm really not, N7. Why don't you just do your work?" Death says, now pissed off.

"Okay, okay, fine, I'll leave. Just don't report me to the supervisor again," N7 says as he turns around to leave.

"Wait... Can I ask you a question?" Death asks.

"Sure, anything for you, N8." N7 says happily, already sitting in front of him.

"Is it possible for humans too..."

"Too?"

"Too see us?"
