DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

Never meant to be born

Her gift, something that only a few are aware of. She looked gentle and dainty and she was but she possessed a frightening ability. The ability to see one's lifespan that is, if she wanted to know. She knows how long a person will live and when they'll die.

This was an ability she developed as she grew into her teens. It frightened her at first and she needed someone to confide in, she spoke to her parents but that gave her father another reason to distance himself from her. While her mother was rendered speechless and until today, she had still not said anything about it. Her mother's lifespan had long run out but somehow, she was still alive. The term 'borrowed life' was perfect for her mother's state and condition.

"You didn't have to remind me of that, Mother, nonetheless, I do not wish to continue this conversation," She said and the woman nodded at her. "I will have your nurse return to your side."

"Thank you," She said and took hold of her hand. "For what it's worth, Nyx, always know that I Love you, and what I have done is for your own good. I wish you a happy married life, Nyx," she let go of her hand and Nyx walked out without another world. Her Hazel eyes almost tearing up as watched her leave.

'Happy married life' these were good wishes but she doubted that would ever happen. She didn't know the man she was being married off to, all she knew was his face, which was indeed good-looking and that he was rich. Besides this, she knew nothing personal about him. She didn't even know why he wanted to marry her. He rushed the marriage so much that it was suspicious but no one seemed to mind that. Nyx felt it was beyond weird that a man who had never known her nor had they met before would suddenly show up and everyone would just agree to their union without question.

"I doubt that will ever be possible, Mother," Nyx uttered under her breath. She wouldn't want her mother to hear those words at this point. She was much too fragile to handle hearing such words from her daughter.

Walking out the door, she met the stylists standing there with their backs to the room. They turned the moment her presence was felt with smiles that she wished to wipe off their faces but knew how powerless she was to be able to do something like that.

"It seems you are ready, Ma'am, please follow us. The maid of honor had gone ahead of you to stall for some time for you," the makeup artist said.

Nyx felt a sickening feeling deep down in her stomach and heart. She had prayed many times already that this should be disrupted but as minutes flew by, she knew that nothing could change it. She would be matching out to meet that man and these women were here to make sure she did. She was sure of that now.

"Fetch my maid of honor," Nyc ordered. If she was going to walk out there, then she should do it with someone whom she knew beside her.

"Your father has agreed to walk you down the aisle, you don't have to worry about walking alone or walking with us," the hairstylist replied.

She should have long known this, they knew too much to be just anybody. She was just too occupied in her thoughts that she failed to realize it sooner. "I see," was all she could say now. It did not surprise her that her father would agree to it. Whether forced or willingly, nothing was a surprise to her today.

They came to a stop before a large double door. Nyx could hear the hushed voices of the people seated at the other side of the door. They sounded happy and very chatty but she knew that it was fake. Their happiness was nothing pretense. Something that would disappear the moment no one was looking at them or could hear them.

The door opened slightly and a middle-aged man could be seen walking towards them. His expression was stern and his eyes piercing, and filled with hatred. One glance was what it would take for anyone to know that he disliked the woman standing in front of him.

"Father," Nyx uttered that word without any emotion attached to it. She called him that because it was the title given to him the moment she was born and her mother had many times told her never to call him by his name. No matter how bad he was, he was still the man who fathered her.

"Save the pleasantries, let's get this over with," he said and looked at the women behind Nyx, "You are both relieved of your duty," he instructed and they bowed their heads.

"You sent them," this was a statement. Her expression was unreadable and she didn't sound as surprised as she should be, that is if she was at all surprised. "It is no wonder they know so much," she said with a nod of her head.

"Take my hand, don't keep everyone waiting for you anymore," he said as if he did not hear her muttering words that he should attempt to give some explanation or apology.

Nyx took his hand, protesting now was not a good idea, it would lead to nothing good, rather it would only prolong the inevitable.

"Tell me, why do you dislike me, Father? You and I share blood, had we not, I would have assumed your hatred was because I was another man's child," Nyx asked in a low voice so that only the man beside her would hear.

The doors were opened and he led her out. He looked at her hand that held his and then looked at her side profile, although she had asked him a question, she didn't even glance at him, her gaze and focus was ahead of her.

"You were never meant to be born, that is why your mother is paying the price for giving birth to you," he replied, his words were as unfiltered as ever.
