Fortunes-Favourite (chapter 10)

Back in Old Mike's shop, Ted could be seen seated in the cashier's chair, balancing the phone between his ear and shoulder. His hands held a lottery ticket in his right hand and, in his left, a gold coin. "Look, it doesn't matter how many angles we look from, this is still suspicious. I mean, a 17-year-old buying a house–"

"An 18-year-old, I turned 18 years old, 4 days ago, Rob. And, don't forget, I won 2 million dollars after tax on a lottery. After all, I am Fortune's favorite," Ted interrupted. "Fortune's favorite," Rob echoed simultaneously.

"Alright, alright, fine. You just want a single house in a remote location, right?" Rob asked as Ted smiled while reading the description of his new magic item, an old coin inscribed with the runic letters F and F. "Yes, I don't mind the appearance or the age of the building. As long as it obeys all regulations needed and is considered livable according to the government, I don't mind how it looks," Ted replied as Rob sighed, and Old Man Mike entered the shop.

"Looks like you're spending your money responsibly," Old Man Mike said sarcastically. "Well, I never liked people anyway," Ted replied, smiling as he clutched the coin. "How is your hand?" Ted asked, observing Old Man Mike's hand wrapped in a bandage. "It's healing well," he said hesitantly, and Ted sighed, anticipating what was coming.

"You decided to accept settling in the senior homes, didn't you?" Ted said, earning a surprised look from the old man, who then sighed as he looked around. "She also spent most of her free time here, among these piles of rusted items," he paused as Ted examined the items. "I never understood why, so I tried spending some time with them, among them, hoping to understand why she would smile every time she was here." Silence filled the room as Ted remained quiet.

"I also see the same smile on you when you're cleaning them, when you are rearranging them," this revelation surprised Ted, who looked at the old man. "Well, they do something that makes you happy, makes you feel at home" Ted said, gazing towards the vast array of artifacts. "Which is why I transferred the ownership of this shop to you. I am tired of waking up every day to open this place," Old Man Mike said as he got up while heading to the kitchen, leaving ted to shocked for couple of minutes before he shook his head, "guess i saw this coming" he sighted as he looked at the floating description of the item in his hand.

Sitting in a bus, Ted, currently dressed very casually, could be seen. Most of his brown hair was combed to the left side of his head, and his bright orange eyes scanned the floating screen. "My spiritual growth is starting to slow down," he sighed, while other passengers on the bus gazed out of the window. The hum of the engine and the occasional rattle of the bus contributed to the background noise.

"Well, look at that. I'll make it to see my mother before visiting hours are over," said a man wearing a grey suit. A woman with very bright orange hair, pale smooth skin, and bright green eyes glanced at her tablet. "Isn't it your lucky day?" she remarked, looking out of the window. She then briefly cast a thoughtful gaze at Ted. "Hmm, Ted, right? A recently turned 18-year-old orphan. Both parents deceased, ran away from different foster homes before working at Mike Hugh's antique shop," she thought as she checked information about Ted.

"And he won 2.4 million dollars in a lottery ticket, after tax, and he wants to buy a place far away from civilization. Reason being, he wants to live off the grid. Hmm, although I haven't got a really good look at him since we always met in the dark, he is good-looking," she continued to delve into his past, to the point where she didn't even notice him staring right back at her. Realizing that she was blatantly staring at him, she flashed a smile before returning her attention to her tablet, and Ted shook his head before refocusing on the floating screen. The bus continued its journey, and the ambient noises of the city merged with the hum of the bus engine.

"My schedule is getting more and more compact. Not only do I have to learn blacksmithing, but it would also be beneficial to delve into mechanics, engineering, and the intricacies of human anatomy," he sighed to himself as he began to ponder his future. The soft hum of the bus and the muted conversations of the passengers surrounded him, creating a backdrop to his contemplation. The gentle vibrations of the bus on the road added a rhythmic touch to his thoughts.

"Since I am planning on crafting my own items instead of buying, it's only natural that I would need to learn how to make them myself," he continued, dismissing the status update on his floating screen. The air inside the bus held a slightly stale quality, a mix of varying scents from different passengers, with occasional gusts of cooler air as the doors opened at stops.

"And that's not even it. I need to fortify my new home as well, since I want it to be my main residence, meaning that it needs to be protected at all costs." Just thinking about the myriad of runes he had to strategically place in his new home made him dizzy. The hum of the bus became a distant sound as he delved into the mental blueprint of his future abode, each detail weighing on his mind amidst the humdrum of the bus ride.
