Sam was outside when he smelled fire before thick clouds of smoke fumed up into the night sky. He immediately went running, seeing it come from his sister's room. Guards were splashing buckets of water with the intent to put the fire out, but he used the melrose vinyl lattice panel to climb up the side fast. When he reached the ivory stone ledge, the fire pushed outward, glass and flint flying at him just as he'd ducked.
When the heat met the slight rain, it hissed. No, someone wasn't stupid enough to take all that was left of Jezmerine from him. But they were. His heart shriveled at the thought. No more could he visit her room just to be reminded of her scent. No more could he fall asleep in her bed when he had trouble sleeping.
