The next morning Mike was at our door with a few men in black and an adorable, cute little girl, she had her brown hair in twin ponytails and didn't have any visible injuries. she had a bright smile on her face.
"is she completely fine?" I asked Mike who was holding her hand.
Mike nodded, "yes boss, she was only locked in a room and that room wasn't dark or anything it even had a TV, it seems like he wasn't planning on mistreating his daughter for a while."
I bent down to her height, she should be only seven years old, "what's your name?" I tried asking in a polite tone as much as possible.
But she clearly disliked me and hid behind Mike.
I looked at Mike smirking, "well, looks like she really likes you."
He sighed "I just bought her a bag of potato chips on our way here, it was quite a long way."
I looked back at the girl "isn't a bag of potato chips too cheap to sell your loyalty for? well anyway since you don't want to introduce yourself, I am Adam, your stupid dad's brother, technically your uncle."
She peeked at me while still hiding behind Mike's legs "my dad isn't stupid." she said as she pouted.
"so cute!" I exclaimed but after realizing something after a few seconds "but not as cute as Cait, anyways come inside, your grandpa and ma are waiting for you, they can't come outside because their backs gave out this morning, and your dad is positively an idiot."
Mike sighed, and the girl followed me in after mike gave her a nod.
On our way to the guest room, the girl finally told me "my name is Mira."
"cute name, who named you?"
"dad says when he was with mommy she wanted to name me Mira if I were a girl."
"your mom gave you a great name," I said as I petted her.
We entered the guest room, and my mom and dad were lying on it while Caitlin was probing them for my childhood embarrassments to tease me. well luckily they didn't have many, but the ones they did have were the most major ones.
She was laughing while listening to their stories, as they dramatized the events in my life, like how when I was seven I watched a romantic movie and said I love you while holding a rose to a random 6th grader girl, who was practically traumatized when I confessed to her in front of her friends and then she rejected me in the most brutal way- which I don't even remember but I did know that my parents were gonna insert some extra details in there which made it more embarrassing.
When I walked in my mom was in the middle of telling her how I called my homeroom teacher 'mom' once and then didn't go to school for a whole week just because I was too embarrassed.
But I guess it was that incident that changed me, I liked how the teacher just played it cool and didn't care at all, she could be just as embarrassed as me, but she wasn't and since then I stopped caring about what other people thought of me and did what I thought was right.
When I walked in the room with Mira, my mom's eyes lit up and she sat up, bearing all the pain, and raised her hands for a hug, and Mira came in running and hugged her tightly "GRANDMA!" she shouted.
After a full hugging montage and a series of grandparent questions, Caitlin finally said hi to Mira.
Mira looked at Caitlin expecting her to introduce herself.
Caitlin pulled Mira and started snuggling her "so cute" she exclaimed.
"even cuter than me?" I asked innocently.
"no one beats you in romantic cuteness, lovey" she replied as she pulled Mira's cheeks.
I nodded in satisfaction.
"you didn't answer who you are," Mira screamed as her cheeks were being stretched.
"oh" Caitlin quickly let go of her, "I am Caitlin, your aunt."
I nodded slightly, "wait how are you are her aunt?"
She grinned, and patted Mira's head "well, I talked to your parents and it would be better if we could at least get engaged before we get plunged into all the court hearings and stuff, plus we will be taking care of Mira while your parents are busy so...."
"wait" I shook my head in disbelief, "we have only dated for about a month!"
Caitlin's expression saddened hearing that, "but-"
Before she could say anything I cut her off, I realized how hurting it would be if some you dearly love and that person also says that he loves you back but when it comes to cementing their status he hesitates, yes one month was too short, but I was sure about Caitlin, it had only been a month but it felt like I have known her for ages, and well even though I wouldn't think about marriage just yet, getting engaged wasn't that bad.
"well, let's go buy our rings together since it isn't a surprise now."
Caitlin's expression went through a visible change, her eyes lit up, "alright!"
"anyways, since that part is done, mom, dad you need to go to the police, to get your statements recorded, although I have already sent the little chat we had yesterday as evidence, so keep your facts straight."
They sighed and my dad asked, "so you were recording the whole convo?"
I nodded "of course, I don't know when things might go south with you people."
My mom turned to Caitlin, "once you get engaged, visit your parents with adam, even though they might not appear to be pleased, they will certainly be, on the inside at least."
Caitlin just nodded silently hearing that.
I objected on Caitlin's behalf "mom, we will see them once Caitlin is comfortable enough!"
"Adam, I think we should-" it was Caitlin who said that "besides if you are by my side I won't have anything to fear," she said with a smile.
She then got up and whispered in my ear, "if Mira is moving in with us we need to get our room completely soundproofed." she winked at me and then walked away with Mira since Mira was feeling hungry.
