The Rescue

Soon after the lady went to get food, she came back with hot steaming soup and placed it on the bedside table.

"Well, it's best you take the soup while it is still hot."

"We have been talking since I woke up, and I didn't get a chance to know who you are," Said Denis weakly.

'My name is Susan, but my friends call me Sue."

"Thanks for everything. I don't know how to repay you for your help and kindness."

"it's nothing," Said Susan as she sat down and continued with her studies on the computer. She could see that Denis was in deep thoughts and could imagine he was trying to understand what led to the attack on him.

Things started to fall into place. He remembered seeing Mark making a call with a weird look on his phone. Also, someone had warned him that his life was in danger and Mark could be after his life, but he dismissed the anonymous message.

What startled him the most if the fact that his friend tried to have him killed coldly. His gaze was cold and startled Susan, who was observing him all along.

There were so many unanswered questions running at the back of his mind

"Did you get my phone on me when you found me?" asked Denis abruptly

"Sure, but the screen was badly broken, but I had it fixed yesterday. It's okay now," answered Susan, her eyes still fixed on the laptop before her

"How come I never met you before? Asked Denis unconsciously loud. He was thinking out loud and didn't think he was that loud.

Susan looked at him, startled. What does he mean by that?

Sue pretended to have heard nothing and continued with her studies.

After observing Susan for some days, Denis was intrigued by the kind of person she was. Everything about her was unique. Her way of doing things, talking, staring, and even working was so outstanding.

Susan was in the kitchen preparing lunch when Denis came in and leaned on the kitchen door for a while. She had not seen him as she continued with her cooking while singing.

'I didn't know someone could sing this well!" Commented Denis while walking in the kitchen.

Startled, Susan almost dropped the carrots on her hands. "Why didn't you announce your presence? You scared me!

"Sorry. I was going to the sitting room and heard you singing while passing."

"ooh' exclaimed Susan regaining her senses

"By the way, you sing so nice. Have you ever considered a career change?"

"I will not give up being a doctor for anything in this world."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I have worked hard for so many years to be where I am today, so giving it up is no option in my dictionary."

"Mmmh, that's interesting. Does your dictionary have the word relationship in it?

"Of course, yes. Wait a minute, why did you ask?"

"Just curious. I have been staying here for over a month now and have not heard any other man apart from me, your guest, or your patient.

Do you have a boyfriend?" asked Denis finally

Though Susan could try to hide it, her face said it all. "We just ended it three months ago, and I am not into relationships anymore, at least not now. I am thinking of pouring my all into my work." Said Sue expressionless

"I think that would be so boring," Said Denis while walking to the utensil stand to take a cup a pour himself water.

Trying to avoid further questions, Susan changed the subject immediately, leaving no chance for Denis to ask anymore. "So what have you decided to do about the guy behind your accident?

The change in expression on Denis's face could make one tremble in fear. "I'll deal with him in a way he will wish to have never been born."

Susan stared at Denis for a while, observing the delicate features on his face, and imagined how it would feel like to kiss him. All these days that they have spent time together, she has found herself immersed in feelings that are beyond what she could comprehend.

Sometimes she could dream of him and do what she could not imagine in the dream. The closer she is to him, the more nervous she becomes. If not for the training she had on how to control her feelings, she could have exposed everything before this man.

She barely knows him. The only thing she knows is his name and the friend's name. She doesn't know if he is married or has a girlfriend.

"Hey Sue, are you okay," Denis asked after he had noticed she seemed to be in another world.

"Sorry. Was thinking. Sometimes things may happen to us to make us better or meet better friends and people." Answered Susan as she rushed to check on the food.

"Go get some rest while I finish up with the cooking." Said Susan trying to stabilize her emotions. Look at this guy. Doesn't he know his presence affected me badly? Thought Susan while tasting the food.

"Okay," answered Denis as he walked to the sitting room and sank on the sofa.

His thought was wild and confused. What was happening to him? That's all he could ask himself. Ever since he started to mingle and talk to Susan, he could not feel like walking away from her. He sometimes wishes he could be her boyfriend.

"Pfft. What am I thinking? I have a fiancée back at home. I better watch myself." said Denis softly as he switched the TV on.
