Ben walked in, suspiciously looking around, almost as if he thought I was hiding something or someone in the room. Their Alpha's dead body perhaps or some rare treasure from ancient times.
"Who were you talking to?" He asked me sharply. His eyes squinted and looked at me as if I were a suspect.
Uh-oh. He'd overheard my conversation, and there was no way I could tell him about the voice speaking to me. I had a feeling he wouldn't believe a word I said.
I had to think quickly of a possible lie to cover up my hysterical cries from a few moments ago.
"I, uhm..." I trailed off trying to find an excuse seeing how Ben looked at me expectantly with one perfect and thick eyebrow cocked up.
"You were?" He repeated after me, clearly growing impatient and suspicious by the second.
"... I was, uhm... conversing with myself! Yes. I was conversing with myself." I finally spat out in a rush and hoped that I sounded convincing to the mighty force above.
His face twisted in confusion and distaste as he looked at me as if I were insane.
Perhaps I was. Reality appears to be a million miles away at this point.
"Talking to yourself? What the fuck does that mean, human?"
His tone was so dissatisfied and bemused that if I hadn't been desperately trying to persuade him to believe my terrible attempt at lying, I would have found it hilarious and burst out laughing.
Unfortunately, all I could muster was a smile that looked more like a cringe.
He shook his head in disbelief, obviously bothered by my deception. But he looked convinced, which was very beneficial to me. Another point I had earned myself thanks to being quick-witted.
"You humans are truly bizarre. It's no surprise that our forefathers drew a line between us. I can't imagine living in a society where people talk to themselves."
I chuckled lightly, amused by his disdain for humanity.
Clearing my throat, I decided to pull his legs a little and add some more color to my evening.
"Is it really that strange?" I asked him with the most innocent expression I could muster.
His expression morphed into confusion. "Is what really that weird?"
"Talking to yourself sometimes… Is it really that weird?"
I opened my big blue eyes as wide as I could to make myself appear like an innocent kitten. I was doing my best to irritate him even more, and it seemed to be working.
"Of course it's abnormal! Consider someone having a full-fledged conversation with their mirror reflection. Do you have any idea how bizarre that would appear? I can't even visualize such an image of anyone I know."
I had to pinch myself at this point to remind myself that I was supposed to appear genuinely curious.
I was praying to the gods in heaven that the glint of mischief in my eyes wasn't so obvious as I awaited his response.
"You can't tell me you've never talked to yourself. You don't do that even when you're alone? You are aware that words of affirmation to oneself are still considered talking to oneself." I pressed further.
His face contorted into one of discomfort and agitation. I'd made a point and inadvertently made him doubt himself.
That gives me two points on the board. Yay me. I cheered inwardly.
"Listen, lady, I'm not here for your silly human games. How dare you divert my attention away from my primary goal?" He changed the subject to get out of the pickle I had put him in.
It was hilarious to watch him explode because he knew he was guilty. He was trying to guilt-trip me right now. fairly typical expectation from someone like him.
I'd successfully amused myself, as well as the ghost of my best friend.
"Okay, okay. I won't dwell on it any longer if it makes you uncomfortable. But it's okay to talk to yourself, just so you know."
The desire to smirk at him as he stared at me with squinted eyes was irresistible. But I had a feeling that if I did, my neck would be snapped off in a matter of seconds. I needed to stay alive if I was going to avenge my best friend.
"Lady, I don't have time for your sentimental nonsense. I came here to pick you up and take you to the Alpha. Your presence is required."
My sense of humor vanished at that exact moment and I was left with a foreboding tone of venom. The hatred that had briefly left my conscious mind returned with full force, encircling the planes of my mind like a dark abyss.
My face was expressionless as I stared at the monster in the shape of a human in front of me. I was horrified by the sight of these creatures; I wasn't one to judge all based on what one or a few had done, but at this point, I felt I had every right to.
"What does he want from me if I may ask?" I asked him. My voice was calm but with an undercurrent of coldness and hostility.
He appeared surprised. Perhaps because of my sudden mood shift or the way I reacted.
Unfortunately for him, I couldn't care less what he was thinking or why he appeared surprised. That was the smallest of my worries. He and the others could as well hack themselves to death for all I cared.
"I don't have to tell you anything, you pathetic creature. Simply get the fuck up and come with me."
He looked annoyed, as if my harshness was unusual for someone in my position, or situation.
Too bad he didn't realize how tough I was.
I sat up on the edge of the bed. I didn't need to change or do anything else because I had woken up all clean. Surprisingly.
"Alpha Cedric is no doubt going to have a great time using a worthless piece of shit like you."
