Unwilling to tell his mother about his past with Paul, Jason stews in silence as he watches his mother and Paul grow closer. At the same time, he finds himself becoming more and more attracted to Paul. When he can’t stand it any longer, Jason makes a pass at his mother’s boyfriend and is surprised his affections aren’t spurned.

Even though Jason finds himself falling in love with Paul, he knows he’s betraying his mother and he hates himself for it. “Okay.”

“You don’t believe me, do you?”

“I’m taking a wait and see approach.”

* * * *

After stopping for breakfast at a diner in New Jersey, we headed to Atlantic City. The weather was overcast, but that didn’t stop us from walking along the boardwalk. We also dipped into one of the casinos and played a few slot machines. Carmen lost twenty dollars and I won fifty that I promptly spent on a huge meal for us at one of the casino buffets before we called it a day and headed home.

“Don’t forget about brunch Sunday with me, my mom, and Paul,” I said as I pulled my car to a stop in front of her apartment building.

She made a face.

“Come on, Carmen. I can’t go by myself. I need you there for moral support.”

“Uh, I just ditched work to be with you today. How much more moral support can I give?”

“We’re family. We’re supposed to help each other.”

“All I see is mehelping you. What have you done for melately? I mean, if I go to brunch Sunday, what do Iget?”
