The chief's voice dropped, steady but sharp, like a warning Kai hadn't yet heard.
"I received a report. Orders came in to hold you in custody the day you reported to work."
Immediately Kai's eyes narrowed, suspicion flickering in his gaze. "Hold me? For what?"
The chief exhaled, rubbing a hand across his face, his frustration barely concealed. "Because people are starting to believe you had something to do with the trafficking cases." He looked directly at Kai now, his expression colder, harsher. "And I think, that's why those people came for you."
