Chapter 49: The Summer Rainstorm

Abigail’s POV

I counted the fireflies every night on our last week of summer together. Each day they’d still appear for the nightly dance, but it would be slower and gentler with the season’s roll toward its end. They’d pick up speed on a particularly hot night where it was so humid Elle and I would have to sleep nude, but the next night they’d calm down once again.

Elle planned a perfect Sunday afternoon for us together, insisting that the last Sunday of summer be a special one.

We left our apartment nice and early, but the air was already hot and heavy where it hung in the air over the road. We shoved through the wall of heat in Elle’s car, blaring the AC so high it almost overtook her music.

She pulled the car to our first destination.

“No road trip is complete without iced coffee,” she insisted. “Or in this case, iced chai lattes.”
