She let the silence wrap around them, leaning her head against his shoulder as they rode up to his apartment. Jenny couldn’t pretend to understand this mood he was in, but considering what she had blurted back at the auction, she wasn’t surprised. No more talking. It wasn’t worth making him even more uncomfortable by saying something worse. She only hoped that she hadn’t wrecked what they’d had.

His fingers stayed entwined with hers as he led her to his door, unlocking it with one deft hand and then pulling her inside. As soon as it closed behind them, Jenny toed off her sandals and exhaled in bliss when her feet sank into the plush carpet.

“I hate those shoes,” she breathed. “I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter how good they make my legs look.”

“Oh, it matters. Of course, I can say the pain is worth it because I didn’t have to experience it. Come here.”
