Sagging in her chair, Jenny pushed her cup away, her appetite for the coffee gone. “I think we’ve moved beyond the fighting phase, Dad. He backs off as soon as conversations start going someplace he doesn’t want to. Just Friday night…” She stopped. Bryan’s words still hurt. “Did he tell you he got somebody he works with to take me around the picnic we went to yesterday? Apparently, Bryan thinks I need professional coaching on how not to embarrass him in public. And even then, he didn’t stick around to see how I was doing. As soon as Ash and I went to get beers, Bryan was off talking to some redhead who probably knows her debits from her mergers.”

“But you and Bryan have never been the sorts to stay in each other’s’ pockets.” He frowned. “Well. Not since high school, at least.”

There was truth there, truth only outsiders seemed capable of pointing out. But that didn’t make it easier to stomach.
