She stared at him in mild disbelief. “You don’t have to do that on my account. I’m okay if you want to go take care of whatever it is he wants.”

“Well, I don’t want to take care of whatever he wants. I’m not at his beck and call. He knows where my office is, and he knows how to schedule a meeting.” Ashley took a long swallow from his beer. “Besides, you’re a far more pleasant companion for such a nice afternoon.”

It should have sounded like a line. Considering he’d been more than honest about his intentions for the day, anything that complimentary coming from Ashley should have set off warning bells inside her head. But standing there, watching him, listening to him, Jenny couldn’t find a shred of duplicity in his demeanor. Maybe it was all part of his grand plan, the one she still wasn’t sure he was following through on, but at that moment in time, Jenny discovered that she really didn’t care.
