She kept waiting for him to move or wake up, maybe give her another opportunity to quiz him about what was going on with work, but Bryan never moved. Jenny sighed. Sometimes she wondered why she bothered. It was probably not a big deal anyway, just his melodramatic tendencies making a mountain out of a molehill. It wasn’t worth getting upset about.

Except it bugged her. Between that and her encounter with Ashley, she wouldn’t be able to sleep for a very long time.

Jenny eased off the bed without disturbing him and slipped out of the room, closing the door behind her. She glanced at the clock as she went over and picked up the phone. After midnight. Late, but she’d called later before. That was one thing about family. They never gave you grief when the need arose.

He answered on the first ring, his voice deep and alert. Jenny sank back into the couch as the relief flooded through her.

“Hi, Dad. I’m not interrupting anything, am I? I was hoping we could…talk.”7
