Chapter 13

She sighed. “You big idiot,” she murmured affectionately before looking up to where Ashley stood a few feet away. “Lemme guess. He had more than one drink tonight.”

Ashley rubbed the back of his neck and had the good grace to look sheepish. “More than one, yeah. Closer to…six.”

“He’s never been able to drink.” Reaching for the coverlet on the back of the couch, Jenny draped it over Bryan’s lanky torso, his long legs sticking out at odd angles from its end. “Usually, he just gets something with tonic and nurses it all night when he has to do these work things.”

With her initial concern for Bryan eased, Jenny stood and faced Ashley, her scrutiny sweeping over him. He didn’t look nearly as bad. In fact, she would have said he hadn’t been drinking at all. “Do I want to know what happened?”
