The mansion part 1: The Siblings!

The gates are made of shining steel, with two guards standing at each side.

As they got closer one of the guards opened the gate.

A maid greeted them with a slight bow.

"Welcome to the city lord mansion, young masters Kage and Roxanne are waiting for you in the office."

Alice got a bit offended as she heard the maid.

"Shouldn't they send the butler to greet us at least, did they forget the noble etiquettes?"

The maid lifted her head, as she fixed her glasses.

"Excuse me if I did not fill your eyes. The butler and the head maid are helping the young masters in their work, you will meet them at his office."

Connor held Alice from her shoulder.

"Don't mind that, let's just meet them," Connor told Alice.

Alice nodded in agreement.

Something just struck Alice's mind, The maid said to the young masters.

"What happened to baron Cain? Who are the young masters?"

As she heard this the maid wore a surprised face.

"You didn't know?! Well…"

The maid started telling the story of what happened.

An earthquake struck a few days ago at night.

Lord Cain was sleeping at the time, as he felt the shaking he woke up and headed outside to see what was happening.

On his way, he fell down the stairs and got badly injured and his health has been in decline since!

Lord Cain has five children, but the older three are either already married in other houses or have their own land to take care of, So the youngest two Kage-sama and Roxanne-sama are the only ones left and they have been taking their father's place.

"Are they competent? Seeing as they sent you to greet us, it doesn't seem that they are!" Alice commented.

The maid grinned as she replied with a smug face.

"I dare say they are even better than lord Cain!"

"Will see!" Alice said.

They followed the maid to the office inside the mansion.

Mei was riding on Connor's head.

The mansion was bigger than any building Connor saw in the town.

If someone looked closely he could see some cracks in the wall, was that because of the earthquake? Connor thought.

As they entered the building they could hear the footsteps of people walking around cause the floor is mostly made of wood.

Connor could see the maid and servants rushing around.

"This place seems busy! Is it always like this?" Connor asked.

"Not always, it became like this after the young masters took over. I don't know about the servants but for us the maids there was a problem!"

"And what is it?"

"Well, usually we cook the master's food first and make it fancy for them, after that we cook something for us the maids and the servants that is more like commoner's food." the maid said.

"I can understand that, What is the problem then?"

"When the young masters took over they said that we need to eat the same food!!" The maid said with a bitter smile.

"I can see how they feel! I also don't like to eat different food than my guards. It feels awkward!" Alice commented.

"You are only four! but there are more than thirty people including the maids and the servants. We can't prepare high-class food since it will take forever and we can't serve commoners food to the young masters! so we are stuck in between." The maid said.

"They said you should eat the same food, but they aren't ready to eat your food? Are they just some spoiled kids?" Connor adds up.

"Truth to be told, they don't mind eating commoner's food at all! Usually, we catch Roxanne-sama sneaking to the kitchen to steal some carrot to eat, while Kage-sama also comes to eat leftovers from the servants' food when he gets hungry rather than asking the maid to cook for him. It's a problem of our pride as a maid, we want to give the best food to the masters!"

Connor thought to himself, Ahh… I get it.

They don't mind fine dining, but still prefer home cooking and junk food.

That seems the closest to how the young masters think.

From how Alice reacted at the gate earlier and the maid story, they don't seem to have the expected level of noble etiquette. and the maids are having problems with that.

At the Corner of the room, a messy bed caught Connor's eyes.

In front of Connor is a large table, stacked with papers.

Facing each other on the table sits two people.

With bags under his eyes that make him look as if he hadn't slept in days.

"This Kage-sama." The maid said.

Facing Kage sits a little girl with long black hair like him. She is short so she is sitting on a book stack on top of her chair.

She slowly turned her head toward Connor.

As she looked at Conner with her black eyes, he sensed that she was inspecting him.

She spoke.

"Fake armor...fake hero?"

"How rude, he is the real deal!" Alice instantly responded to her.

"Roxanne-sama, please be a little respectful to the hero," the maid said.

"Your face.... doesn't resemble… any of the people... that lives in this kingdom… nor the neighboring kingdoms… where did you come from?" Roxanne asked.

Connor felt chills down his spine as if he was in interrogation for a crime.

"I came from a far country to the north, that's why my face is unusual here!" Connor replied with an answer he thought of beforehand to use in case someone asked about his origin.

"Hmm… You're lying!" Kage spoke.

Connor was taken aback by Kage's words.

"Why do you think so?" Connor asked.

"We are a coastal kingdom and the continent to the north only has four countries, I'm sure Roxanne counted for those," Kage replied bluntly as if not interested.

"You don't have to, as long as she is the holy maiden it means that a hero is in action whether it was you or another!" Said Kage pointing to Alice.

Alice just remembered why she is here in the first place.

"On another note, why didn't you show up even when the hero is in the city? also what is the matter with executing Dolrig?" Alice asked.

"Well, that is the aftermath of the earthquake!"Kage responded.

"The aftermath?" Lydia asked.

The aftermath of the earthquake was massive!

Countless injuries and a considerable number of deaths occurred!

A lot of people were left homeless due to their houses getting destroyed.

We even lost a considerable amount of food and firewood to the rain after the warehouse roof cracked without anyone noticing until it was too late.

The citizens were furious, demanding an explanation. Something to take their anger and frustration on.

Dolrig was an easy target! a dwarf that only moved to the town a few years ago and has been known to handle curses.

'Witchcraft he used!' they said and punishment they wanted.

They gathered in front of the mansion in masses.

Raging and crying, demanding justice for their deceased.

Got injured so is now asleep in bed.

Treachery!! he is with him, scheming to kill the lord they said.

A riot was looming on the horizon and it was bad!

The people wanted to burn the mansion down.

With torches and pitchforks, they stand at the gate.

"I can't believe such a thing happened! But wasn't that a bit weird? just a riot like that!" Alice said with a sad face.

"You're right, it smells fishy to me," Alva commented.

"I also felt the same, the event developed too fast it felt directed!" Kage said.

"You think someone fueled the riot on purpose?" Connor asked.

"Just speculation, nothing solid. But remember if it was true you're the one who foiled their plans and they might come for you!" Kage told Connor with a serious face.

"So I just have to be careful? nothing else?" Connor said.

"As you see right now I'm stacked with work, but I should be able to spare a man or two to guard you on your way. I also suggest you take Dolrig with you, it's better if he doesn't stay in town!" Kage declared.

"All those papers here are?" Alice asked as she started reading one that was on the desk.

"Document about the supplies the town needs for food and repair from the earthquake, the repair is mostly done but we still need to sort out food and firewood!" Kage said.

"Heee! Roxanne was helping you with those despite her age, she is really a good girl." As Alice looked at Roxanne.

Roxanne's eyes were sparkling as she was looking at Connor, no looking at something above him?

On top of Connor's head, Mei was sitting.

"Fluffy!!" Roxanne murmured.

When Connor realized he asked Mei to play with Roxanne.

"Mei, can you play with Roxanne over there?" Connor asked Mei.

Mei jumped from Connor's head and raced toward Roxanne.

Roxanne opened her arms to try catching Mei.

Mei jumped straight into Roxanne's embrace.

"Fluffy!!Fluffy!!!" Roxanne is happy she got to play with Mei.

"Her name is Mei, not Fluffy!" Connor commented.

Roxanne looked at Connor then Mei.

"Her name is Fluffy Mei! Can I name her two?" she asked with a serious face.

"Well Mei looks happy so why not? Fluffy Mei is now her full name!" Connor declared.

Roxanne kept playing with Mei as everyone in the room watched in awe.

"It makes me happy seeing her act her age once in a while," Kage said.

"Your right! by the way, how is your father's condition?" Connor asked.

The room went quiet.

Everybody looked sad.

The one to break the silence was none other than Roxanne herself.

"Bad… his wounds have healed... but that wasn't the only problem...our father is old… and the injury he sustained… was the droplet that spilled the cup… his age is coming back at him!"

You could hear the trembling in Roxanne's voice, as tears started piling in her eyes.

"I dug in every book… I could get my hands into… but found nothing to help… his body is giving up… he doesn't have much…" Roxanne broke down to tears.

The head maid that was quietly working on the papers stopped and went to calm Roxanne.

Kage was clenching his fist with a sad grim face.

Connor turned toward Kage with a serious and concerned face.

"You're not joking, RIGHT?!"

"I wish I was, we can do nothing about old age." Those words came forcefully from Kage's mouth as she was trying his hardest to not cry.

"Does the other sibling know?" Alice asked.

"We did send them letters, they should be here in less than a week." the butler that was helping the head maid spoke up.

"And where is sir Cain's wife? Shouldn't it be here?" Alice asked.

"Mother is staying by father's side in his room, you can see him in the evening," Kage replied.

"A Sufficient rest… food and care… can help father… hold longer," Roxanne said as she just stopped crying.

"Kage, what are the problems we face right now?" Connor asked.

"Food, firewood, protection of the town, figuring if someone was behind the riot, buying enough time for my sibling to come before the inevitable comes!" Kage lists the major problems.

Someone who could help us with all of those.

"When we reach my father's domain I will send as much support as I can!" Alice said.

"Thanks, I will make sure to repay you for this." Kage thanked Alice.

"We shall go now, you look like you still have much work to do," Alice said.

"Kage, you should rest a bit. It's apparent that you're exhausted." Connor said.

"You're right." Kage agreed.

Connor and the rest left Mei with Roxanne to play with her.

One of the maids came to show them to their rooms.

Apparently, the maids prepared a single room.

A very large one at that with a king-sized bed.

"What is this?" Connor asked the maid.

"We prepared the room as per lady Roxanne's orders, she said to give you this letter." The maid handed a letter to Connor and left the room.

Connor opened the letter and the girls poked their heads to take a look too.

"Wait, Alice! If Lydia sits on Alva with her armor on it will be bad! Let's take their armor off first!" Connor suggested.

Alice started helping Lydia take off her armor while Connor helped Alva.

Connor didn't want Alice to help Alva take off her armor.

"I only wanted Alice-sama to try something more mature!" Alva murmured to herself.

Connor overheard her and thought of something to help her.

"Hey, Alva come over here!" Connor dragged Alva to the corner of the room.

"Is there a problem?" Lydia and Alice asked as they saw Connor Draggin Alva.

They looked at each other in confusion.

Connor whispered to Alva.

"First of all, you don't mind this right? I can ask Alice to not make you a chair to Lydia!" Connor asked Alva.

"Ahh... I don't mind it, we are just fooling around. I would have a problem with Lydia's heavy armor digging into my back, but you already took care of that for me so thanks." Alva responded calmly.

Connor then helped Alva take her armor off.

"Your clothes are overly fancy, while your underwear are simple and timid. They don't fit a girl your age! I think you should change to more mature stuff and I want to help you with that!" Alva said it!

Well it's true that Alice's outfit is maks look like a wannabe princess teenage girl, while she is a grown woman in her early twenties, it isn't weird for women her age to be married or in a more active relationship!

As she was looking at Connor Alva felt a hand pulling her hair.
