The Accident

I tap my foot to the beat of the music blaring from the radio. I hear my twin sister, Adeline, screaming along to the chorus while she dances in the front seat. Having enough of Ady's private concert, Miles turns off the radio receiving a glare from my sister and me.

"You sound like a dying banshee, Ady", Miles exclaims causing Ady to punch him in the arm.

"Hey!! I'm driving here." Miles rubs his arm while trying to hold on to the steering wheel. They bicker back and forth like brother and sister. Well, Miles basically is our brother. He has been my best friend since kindergarten. Growing up, it was the three of us against the world.

I lean my head against the window listening to my best friends go at each other. I feel Luke rest his hand on my thigh before he starts asking about our plans.

"So today is my two favorite girls' birthday. Not to mention our anniversary, babe. Happy three years." He brings my hand up to his lips earning exaggerated gagging from the two morons in the front. Luke and I share a knowing look before eye rolling.

"But in all seriousness, what are we doing today? It's completely up to you, girls."

I zone out as Ady starts talking about all the things she wants to do. I look out my window enjoying the view. On my side, you can't see anything but trees; on the opposite, the earth gives way to a massive cliff side where a river runs.

"What do you think, Em?"

The sound of my name brings me back to reality.

"Sorry. What was that Ady?" I ask trying to recall what has been said.

"I was just wondering what you thought about going to a party tonight. I know that isn't really your thing, but since it's our birthday I figured we could try to have some fun."

I sigh. I don't understand what anyone sees in going to parties. Being in a crowded room with drunk teenagers isn't my cup of tea.

"If you really want to, I'll go with you. Are y'all two going?" I question Miles and Luke.

"I'll be wherever you are, babe" Luke says as he gives my hand a squeeze. I smile back at him knowing he means it. Luke is my biggest fan besides my sister. I really am so lucky to have him.

A loud bang brings me out of my thoughts.

"What the..." the scream from Ady's mouth dies away as we all stare at the horror in front. Miles head is slumped over the steering wheel. Blood pouring out everywhere as the horn blares continuously.

My mind goes blank as I watch our vehicle head straight toward the rocks in front of us. As the car slams head first into the boulder, black clouds my vision.

As my vision comes back, I hear someone screaming. I look to the front of the car to see if my sister is the source. I see her limp body stuck between the remains of the car hood and her seat. As I look into her lifeless eyes, I realize that the screaming belongs to me. I start gasp for air frantically as if someone is crushing my windpipe. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Luke's hand gripping my shoulder snapping me out of my shock.

"Em, I need you to run!" Luke's voice fills my head as I open the car door and stumble out. I see several people with guns running down the road from in front. With Luke still yelling, I take off across the road running to the shelter of trees. As soon as my feet touch the grass, I feel a tug on my pony tail dragging me to the ground. As the air is knocked out of me, I lay on the grass gasping. Dark spots cloud my vision as I feel a sharp kick to my stomach. I immediately curl into the fetal position crying out. I spot the butt of a gun seconds before it crashes into my skull.

Why did this happen?

Who are these people?

Where is Luke?

As these questions cross my mind, darkness consumes me.
