Chapter 20

“He obviously didn’t want us leaving the city. Probably afraid once we crossed the border, he’d never find us,” Todd said as he swung onto his horse. When Nick didn’t say anything, simply mounted his horse, Todd continued, “You know, he’s right, too.”

Nick nodded and kept his horse close to Todd’s. Todd reached over and rubbed Nick’s shoulders a few times.

“Nicky, you’re not going back there as a slave. You’re going back as a sentry and my mate. Trust me when I say they’ll damn well know it, too.”

“I know,” Nick said softly. He wiped the back of one hand across his nose and mouth. He took a deep breath and went on, “Ever since that day you came and we left there together, through all those nightmares, I worked so hard putting that place out of my head. That wasn’t my life anymore and I’ve tried to forget.”

“It’s just another job, buddy,” Todd said, giving Nick’s shoulder a pat and squeeze. “Nothing more.” He tried to sound encouraging.
