Chapter 44

Aaliyah

"This may burn," he said.

As Tristan dabbed the cotton wool on my wound, my chest burned with pain. I could barely breathe as I stared up at him. I looked at the man I had once been in love with.

I'd opened my heart to him. He'd told me that my voice was so calming for him. I liked him even after he opened up about the people he'd killed in his past. A tremor coursed through my veins as my eyes burned with tears.

He couldn't even answer my question when I asked him about the tradition.

"Was any of it true?" I asked. "That you got those women killed?"

Tristan's eyes connected with mine, and he turned still like a statue. His lips pressed into a thin line.

It took everything in me to hold myself from shedding any more tears. That would bring more shame to me. I would not cry in front of him.
