For a shifter who has been cut off from her own culture, my mate was handling things quite well, but I could see that she was on the brink of a nervous breakdown at any moment.

Indeed, I was plagued by feelings of guilt. In an ideal world, I would have served her the finest wines and gourmet cuisine while charming her into utter submission by demanding nothing less than her due as my mark. Ideally, she'd wrap her legs around mine.

Instead, I had a mate who was angry and afraid as she tried to process the news that the world wasn't what she had expected it to be.
