Ch 19 I'll do it myself

Daniel's POV

Looking around after my little declaration, I see the remaining players who planned on staying behind watching me for my next move.

"Yes, I'll stay but don't try anything funny, Crappy-kawa. I'm warning you" Letting a bit of my menacing aura leak, I hoped to scare him a bit but he just seemed even happier.

'Sigh, why do I even bother?'

Third Person POV*

Walking back into the gym, Daniel takes off his headphones and changes his shoes. Leaving on his sweatpants, he made his way to the court and heard the players deciding teams.

Suddenly, without warning Daniel felt something nagging him at the back of his mind but he couldn't recollect his thoughts. 'However, why is it that when I try to dismiss thinking about it I feel something is wrong?'

'Whatever, I'm sure I'll figure it out soon'

After choosing the teams, surprise, surprise. Okay maybe not so surprising, I'm on Oikawa's team. This guy just doesn't learn. But still this opportunity is well timed, I can try to incorporate Hinata Shoyo's receiving technique into my defense skill set.

To do that though, I will focus solely on defending to get as many reps possible to integrate it sooner.

The reason I'm choosing to learn the split step are for multiple reasons, it will help cover up my defensive base, switching into attack and counter attacking and to prepare for any changes in canon due to my existence.

I don't think I will ever need to resort to it but it is better to prepare and not use it than to need it and not have it.

The split step forces the player to get into an athletic stance which means a wider base. In general it can either get one into receiving stance for defending, 3 step approach as an option or even making it in time as a save for a block out. There's so many avenues to explore with the split step.

After a best of 3 rock-paper-scissors game, Oikawa lost and what do you know ? They're servi..oop it's coming right at me, right off the bat.

The key to a split step is timing and well also muscle memory. It needs to be done without thinking and your body judging the right time itself. Trying to think about it will cause the athlete to feel heavy and not move and even if they do get up and running, they're slow and miss the timing.

Lightly hopping and spreading my feet, I go low and stand up just as the ball is hitting my arms, sending it up in the air.

'Tsk, it's off'

Oikawa quickly gets under it and sets it to me? Oi yamero, wait, I can use this as well to practice my aiming accuracy even more.

This time, I don't bother to jump for a back row attack and try to hit the net to throw off the receivers on the other team. Making sure to control my strength to lightly hit the ball at its center point, killing off any possible spin which therefore makes its direction unpredictable.

Well maybe for the receivers but I can predict it to a certain extent, why you ask?

Well, duh, if I am trying to let it hit the net, ideally, where is the ball going ? Obviously the net.

The ball's edge barely scraped the edge and started falling. With no player going after it.

Kuh Kuh Kuh

Although it didn't match my expectations, it was nonetheless satisfactory. Perhaps increasing my strength a notch should be enough.

The other team rolled the ball to Oikawa who was now serving so he was now beside me.

'Why, I didn't want to have to do this' Looking at Oikawa with a smirk on his face, he opened his mouth to say something to me.

"You should choose your words wisely" Confused, his mouth was left in the same position momentarily before doing his signature jump serve.

As an individual player Oikawa is very strong but for his team he's willing to take any step for his teammates to bring out their 100% which could be seen with his conversations and the 'MAD DOG' later in series. If possible, I would like to leave him as he is, but if push comes to shove…. no matter what choice I took, it would be the right one.

.

Walking back into the spot to my right, he faced me and said

''I want you to be my strongest weapon" He spoke sincerely but in my ears, it made me wince but I steeled my nerves.

'Sigh, the hardest choices require the strongest will'

'Remember Daniel, it is a small price to pay for salvation'

"Move, only I will be receiving" I stepped forward and watched the other team receive and make the pass to the setter.

'Left'

Taking a step to the left, the setter made a quick set to the Middle Blocker(MB) and he hit it in a way it avoided his blocker but that was sent right where I was waiting to receive.

Imagine Oikawa appearing behind the blockers against Karasuno where Hinata scored the game point:
