Chapter 40

He made his way to the Alpha's office, it was about time for them to take their leave, he was sure that Virgil would probably have something to say before that.

Absently, he pushed open the door to Virgil's office, the past hour had gone by without him even realising it, he had been too busy panicking to notice.

His eyes went wide when he stepped in and everyone in the room turned to look at him, Leon and Darian were already here, which was something he should have predicted.

Afterall, they were the ones going on a work trip, he was merely tagging along, Virgil using this as an opportunity to get rid of him.

Somehow he managed to not trip, avoiding both Darian and Leon's gaze which were clearly on him.

"Hey Jax." Virgil smiled slightly, inviting him to sit. "I didn't think you'd come, they're just about to leave though so you came at the right time."

With that, he turned back to his Head Warriors. "Don't push yourselves and for fuck's sake don't cause trouble." He added, staring right at Leon.

"Why are you looking at me?" Leon threw back an affronted look.

Virgil just sighed tiredly. "Jax, please make sure they don't cause a Pack War."

"Yeah sure." He agreed, still distracted. He was running out of spots to look out without revealing that he was avoiding their gazes, he could only hold off for so long.

"Don't worry, Jaxie will take good care of us." Leon spoke up again.

Jaxon's eyes whipped to his direction in time to catch the devastating smirk that followed his words, after that he looked at Darian as well, unable to help himself.

Darian was staring at him with an undecipherable look, midnight blue eyes staring deeply at him.

Virgil made a face at this, extremely concerned about the trip but he had already given his word to the Midnight Pack's Alpha.

Alpha Noah had been more than pleased at Virgil's positive response, taking back his word now would be just cruel.

"You all better get on the road so you don't have a late journey." He dismissed them, returning back to work.

He was also thinking of getting an intern to help out at the offices up on the Alpha floor, he didn't want to mention it to Jaxie because he knew that his Head Beta would have gotten worried that he was leaving behind too much workload for him.

He wasn't in reality, with Jaxon's return and his appointment as the Head Beta, he had managed to clear up most of the complications they had with documents from the past and it was his advice that helped Virgil and Dale made the right decisions they needed to take control over a sizeable part of the town.

So he wanted to get an intern or two just so that he could be able to convince Jaxon to relinquish more of the workload he currently handled.

Jaxon got to his feet first, eager to escape from the intimidating presence of the two Head Warriors.

Although just as he got back to his room he realised the flaw in that reasoning, it only hurried along the time for the dreaded drive.

Just as he got back to his apartment, a knock rapped on the door, startling him.

He opened it to reveal to very two people that he had been on the run from.

"Oh! Hey!" He exclaimed nervously, grateful he hadn't bitten his tongue or worse.

The next moments were filled with him staring at them, in confused distraction, wondering what they wanted while at the same time trying not to panic because he just went on dates with the both of them and now they were here, together, in front of him.

"We came to help you take your stuff down?" Darian was the one to put him out of his misery, Leon enjoying his discomfort.

"Oh! Sorry." Jaxie shook his head, breaking out of his trance. He needed to get himself together.

"Thanks." He mumbled, letting them come in.

The journey down was uneventful, thankfully. Jaxon was distracted through it all, worrying about how to act, things were much easier before they went on dates with each other.

He wasn't going to take back the dates though, he just wished he knew how to act in front of two people that were equally interested in him.

It was exasperating that he seemed to be the only one bothered, Leon and Darian acted the same way they always did, if they were a little more competitive now, well, mostly Leon.

"Are we all set?" He asked when his luggages had gone into the trunk of the car they would be taking.

"Ye…" Darian started to say but he was interrupted.

"Wait!" Agnes' breathless voice floated over, the delicate, old lady pattering down to where they stood by the car with a package in her hands. "The goddess save me, I'm not as young as I used to be." She panted slightly when Jaxon hurried forward to intercept her.

"I wanted to give this to you upstairs but I heard you were already long gone and then I knew I had to hurry if I wanted to catch up with you." She started to explain in detail although she was completely out of breath and struggling.

None of Jaxon's techniques quietened her down so they had to bravely watch her finish her tale.

"I fretted for what if I missed you, how would you leave without one last bite of my pumpkin pie." She said affectedly, wiping underneath her eyes with a dotted kerchief she pulled out of the pockets of her dress.

"We will only be gone for a couple months at most." Jaxon was quick to remind her when it seemed like she was convinced that they were leaving for good.

"All the more reason why you definitely have to take my parting gift…" She rambled on, although Jaxon had made no move to refuse it and was currently holding it.

At this point, Darian had had enough. Leon was the only one who wasn't a part of the conversation, he leaned against the side of the car, watching Jaxon and Darian struggle with the old lady.

"Thank you, Agnes." He said firmly, placing a possessive arm around Jaxon's waist. "But we have to be on our way now." He stated clearly.

The relief on Jaxon's face was obvious, he had been at a loss on how to get rid of the persistent little lady.

Agnes fluttered her lashes at this. "Oh of course, have a safe trip boys, try to keep your eyes on the road." She waved them away, watching them leave on a wave of thanks that Jaxon kept saying to her.

"Road trips are fun." She murmured to herself breezily, waddling back into the Pack House.
