A Great Mess II

"Hey, Craig? Since you are not going to work today, I will just step out briefly and go see May." I wanted to go out and see if there was a way I could sort out the issue with this contract. I do not want to have financial difficulties.

"You told me May is not in town until Monday," he asked.

"Oh... she came back last night. She wants us to go over her wedding plans. You know how stressful it is for her. I won't take long." I picked up my car keys and gave him a kiss. "I will pick Sally on my way, so do not worry about her. Lunch is in the oven if you get hungry. Love you." I walk out the door not waiting to hear more questions.

I did not want him to see how much I hated lying to him.

I knocked at the door and moments later the door was opened by a tall and broad-shouldered male, bald with dark heavy brows, looking at me with his curious dark brown eyes -Sage Featherbird.

"Hi, Sage?" I said nervously.

"Hello, Blair," he replied, his voice as cruel as a new knife.

"Can I come in?"

"Oh, yes please." He showed me in, as the door closed behind us, making my heart skip a beat.

I walk into the living room, and it feels like I am where I should have been years ago. "You have done so well for yourself," I say to him.

"Well, sometimes setbacks can bring you good luck," he replied in a harsh tone.

I take a seat on the cozy white sofa, admiring the white walls, and a touch of green here and there. "Sage, I never meant to leave you at the altar. I...was not ready to spend the rest of my life with you."

Safe laughed evilly. "You were not ready, but you accepted to be my fiancée." He came close to me and sat down - too close for comfort. "You were not ready, yet you went on with the wedding plans. You were not ready, yet you sent out invitations. Blair, I can go on and on. I must have been stupid to think you actually loved me. What do you want!" He shouted.

Words left me. I stared into those dark brown eyes burning with anger, and my heart fell silent.

"Answer me!" he roared. But I couldn't will my lips to move. As if stuck underwater, everything was slow and warbled as he pointed a shaky finger in my face. "Do you have nothing to say? Why are you here!" he demanded.

But my mind was blank and my eyes wide as I stared at him in horror. I had to say something! "I need your help. The contract on the building of your new hotel was withdrawn from Balls Ford Contracting and I would like for you to consider changing that decision." I try to comport myself as I wait for his response.

"Are you the contractor or do you just work with them?" he asked.

"No. I do not work there, my husband does. He is the contractor and I would love for you to reconsider. Please," I begged.

He laughed. "You are joking!" He stood up to pour himself a glass of whiskey, then turned to me. "You left me at the altar. Now you walk back into my life and ask me for a favor. You are five years late darling, I am not stupid."

"Sage, please just listen to me." I pleaded.

"I have listened to you enough! Get out of my house!" he shouted.

"Sage I beg of you. My husband has already used the company funds to get the pieces of equipment and building materials needed for the project. But now that you have withdrawn the contract, he has to pay back every dime he used. That will leave us broke."

"He should have thought about that before making a risky decision." He sat down and looked at me with anger still burning in his eyes. "You left me broken, let us call this even," he said as he sipped his whiskey.

I could see in his eyes that he is broken inside, I went on my knees. "I beg of you, we need your help. I need you to help us."

He looks at me with pity in his eyes. "What do I get in return?"

He had not changed, one bit. The sight of him at this very moment makes me sick from the ends of my hair to the nails on my toes. "Are you kidding me?"

"Well, I must as well get my taste of revenge Blair."

"You really want something in return, what could I possibly have to give?" I asked.

"Good, I need you here every day and spend at least one hour with me. For a week. Take it or leave it," And looked away.

"Spend time with you, doing what? I have a husband and a daughter for crying out loud! How do you expect me to 'spend time with you'?" I was so furious and at the same wondered to myself if I had made the right decision in coming here.

"You should have thought of that before stepping your feet in my house! Do you want to help your husband or not?" He was angry, he also wanted his revenge and I wanted to help Craig. Win-win. But at what cost?

"Ok, I will start tomorrow. I have to go pick up my daughter from school. And Sage, thanks for the help."

"You are not welcome. See you tomorrow," He said coldly and walked out leaving me in the sitting room. I picked up my bag and left, still hoping and praying that this will not come back and eat me alive.

"Hey, I need you to do a background check. Blair Crimson. I want everything about her and her family on my desk, first thing tomorrow morning." Sage hung up as he looked through the window, watching her walk away.

He would get her back, but first - it was time for revenge.
